Description

Now updated with a digital option! The digital option is a Google Form.

Will your class escape in time? Uh oh! Your students are stuck on Mars! Their satellite is broken, and they must fix it to communicate with Earth and return home. Students will try and breakout from their risky situation by solving a string of math problems and clues. This is a review game for the math concepts taught in 3rd grade under the domain of operations and algebraic thinking. It can be played in small groups, or as a whole class. If your class has never played an escape game before, I suggest playing as a whole class for the first time.

**Versions with and without QR codes included

This is an interactive game where the students are timed. Students try and solve clues and math problems to breakout and escape the classroom. You, the teacher, can decide how much time your students have to complete the task. I will suggest 45 minutes, but it is up to your discretion. You can project a timer for your class, or put one somewhere for all the students to see, so they can keep track of how much time they have left to complete their task.

This is similar to a scavenger hunt where students will be moving around the room, looking for clues to unlock their envelopes (I have included riddles and suggestions on where to hide each clue). To unlock their envelopes, students will need to solve math problems. A paper is provided so students can show their work for each problem. For many of the questions, students must have an answer that matches one on an envelope. If the answers do not match, they can’t open or “unlock” the envelope, and must rework the problem.

*Everything is included, however teachers must provide their own envelopes.

I give step by step instructions on how to set up the game, including pictures! This is sure to capture the attention of your students.

Topics covered in this game:

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

*Interpreting products of whole numbers.

*Interpreting whole number quotients.

*Using multiplication and division within 100.

*Solving real world problems.

*Determine the unknown number in a multiplication or division problem.

*Applying properties of operations to multiply and divide.

*Solving two-step word problems.

*Identifying arithmetic patterns.

For the digital option:

Technology Requirements

  • A Google Drive account
  • If sharing with students, a Drive account that is linked to student Google accounts
  • Can be shared/delivered on Google Classroom
  • Only need access to Goggle Drive--no outside links to worry about!

This escape room can be used with iPads, chrome books, laptops, and desktops as long as your students have access to Google Drive or Classroom on a device. The escape room is on a Google Form. Students must answer the questions correctly to advance to the next section, and eventually escape.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 56 ÷ 8 as the number of objects in each share when 56 objects are partitioned equally into 8 shares, or as a number of shares when 56 objects are partitioned into equal shares of 8 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a number of shares or a number of groups can be expressed as 56 ÷ 8.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
