Describing Sedimentary Rocks Worksheet

Students will learn how clastic, chemical, and biochemical rocks form and get hands-on practice at telling if a sedimentary rock is clastic, chemical or biochemical!

This 3-page worksheet is to be used for notes and a hands-on activity. It includes a section for notes, a data collection chart, and conclusion questions.

Students will first review how sedimentary rocks form and the differences between clastic, chemical, and biochemical sedimentary rocks. They will then take turns observing samples of sedimentary rocks and, using what they learned, identify the rocks as either clastic, chemical, or biochemical. Students are asked to back up their answers with evidence and make further connections to the material with a set of conclusion questions.

Teachers should have access to six samples of clastic, chemical, and biochemical sedimentary rocks to do the activity with students.
