Description
34-slide in-depth PPT on the Integumentary System AND a guided notes sheet for your students!
This 34-page PPT focuses on the skin, nails, and hair. Students learn the main functions of the Integumentary System as well as its parts.
Students start of by guessing how many pounds of skin they think the average adult has (answer: 22 pounds). I then show students a map of the world based on skin color and have students in partners analyze the map and come up with a reason why humans have different skin colors. They are then shown a video (clip included) of melanin and its effect on skin color.
Students then begin the guided notes portion, first starting with the definition of the Integumentary System and its main function. Students then learn the locations and roles of the three layers of the skin (Epidermis, Dermis, and Subcutaneous Fat). Before moving on to hair, I have students think through why humans have eyebrows (answer: to protect from excess light and dust getting into the eyes) and they then learn the role that hair plays in the integumentary system. Students then move on to the function that nails play, and are shown a slide with facts about the Guinness Book of World Record's holder for world's longest nails to keep them interested.
The tail end of the slide focuses on sweat glands and their roles in keeping the body cool, melanin production to protect about UV rays, and the skins role in producing Vitamin D. I end the PPT with five slides that I use as check for understanding questions.
