Description

Language Sticks will quickly become a staple in your therapy room for years to come. The words are supplemented with images, adding additional visual support which facilitates increased independence among early readers or English Language Learners. Instructional and Independent levels allow for differentiation and provide a systematic means for growth throughout the year. Detailed data sheets allow tracking for pre/post data or progress monitoring.

Language sticks are a great go to resource for your therapy room/classroom that offers interactive learning with a break from traditional task cards. They include multiple opportunities for practice while differentiating for individual needs. Use them on their own or pair them with Articulation Speech Sticks in your mixed groups. My students love to adorn their language sticks with clothespins, beans, balls of play dough, etc. as they travel down their sticks or select their next target.

Are your students often described as hands-on or multisensory learners?

Mine are too. I love that interactive Language Sticks can be incorporated into a mixed group activity or used on their own. Students are able to interact with the Language Sticks, adorning them with clothespins, playdough, beans, small rocks, etc. It helps bring controlled choices into your therapy room as students can choose their sticks/manipulatives/reinforcement yet you provide the foundational materials that target their goals (i.e., irregular past tense). It is a win-win.

Do you feel like you spend the majority of your time taking data and less time really instructing students on the targeted skill?

I did. We live in a data driven world. I needed to find a balance between obtaining the data needed to support my students’ goals and instructing them how to improve the actual skill. I felt most of my time was spent assessing what they did not know with minimal instruction to teach those skills. Language Sticks allow me to instruct my students in a systematic manner with a direct correlation to application of learned skills.

This is a great resource to target a huge variety of language skills. I love that the skills are leveled by difficulty. There is a bit of prep work on the front end to assemble them, but it is totally worth it. I especially appreciate that data sheets were included.

I got this on sale and left it for months, stuck on how to do laminated strips since I don't have space (or budget) for paint sticks. Many are different lengths due to extra columns, and the prospect of cutting, gluing back-to-back, laminating, cutting was daunting and I wasn't sure how important the doublesidedness was. In case it's useful for anyone, I left them single-sided, kept the side margins so they'd all be the same paper width, and put a binder ring in both margins to make little flip books. They all fit in a shallow, A4-length pouch with some mini clips for easy travel. I also couldn't figure out the covers (whether to keep them level with the top/center/etc) so I skipped them. There's also a lot of duplicate strips that aren't necessary if single-sided (like a whole page of describing cues - didn't realise until the cutting stage). My students really enjoy them and the ones I've used so far have been fun, a great way to visualise a lot of different skills , so I'm glad to have it now that it's done.
