Description

This completely digital product includes a PowerPoint presentation, accompanying illustrated student guided notes, and a review worksheet, and will provide students with a thorough introduction to the characteristics that distinguish living things from non-living things and the life processes! This product is available as both a digital and a print version, and the 24-slide PowerPoint includes the following topics (in this order):

1. Characteristics of Living Things: Highly Organized, Use Energy, Definite Shape/Size, Limited Life Span, Grow, Respond to Change, Reproduce, Composed of Cells

2. Life Processes: Nutrition, Transport, Respiration, Synthesis and Assimilation, Growth, Excretion, Regulation, Reproduction

3. Metabolism and Homeostasis

4. Vocabulary Summary: Acrostic (Mr. H. Stranger)

These notes are highly interactive! Students will fill in the blanks and answer questions as the content is presented. Helpful images and diagrams from the PowerPoint are also embedded within the guided notes to assist student understanding.  Included in the PowerPoint are also links to several YouTube videos I have found helpful in teaching this material, which are of course optional! The level of detail is appropriate for a middle school biology or high school general biology course, but perhaps not sophisticated enough for an Advanced Placement course.

The review worksheet pairs directly with the PowerPoint, and can be used as a homework assignment, or even a quiz!

DISTANCE LEARNING:

This product is completely digital and can be easily emailed to students or posted to an online classroom page. As the notes are a Word document, students can type directly on the document if they are unable to print. If using Google Classroom, you are provided with a link to a Google Docs version of both the guided notes AND the review worksheet, and the PowerPoint can be opened easily with Google Slides.

NGSSMS-LS1-3
Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells. Emphasis is on the conceptual understanding that cells form tissues and tissues form organs specialized for particular body functions. Examples could include the interaction of subsystems within a system and the normal functioning of those systems. Assessment does not include the mechanism of one body system independent of others. Assessment is limited to the circulatory, excretory, digestive, respiratory, muscular, and nervous systems.
NGSSMS-LS1-1
Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells. Emphasis is on developing evidence that living things are made of cells, distinguishing between living and non-living cells, and understanding that living things may be made of one cell or many and varied cells.
NGSSHS-LS1-2
Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms. Emphasis is on functions at the organism system level such as nutrient uptake, water delivery, and organism movement in response to neural stimuli. An example of an interacting system could be an artery depending on the proper function of elastic tissue and smooth muscle to regulate and deliver the proper amount of blood within the circulatory system. Assessment does not include interactions and functions at the molecular or chemical reaction level.
