Description

These Google Slides math lessons demonstrate how to use the standard algorithm to solve long division problems. Division problems include 1 digit divisors and up to 4 digit dividends, with and without remainders. These lessons are perfect for fourth grade Common Core (CCSS) math or as a review for 5th grade.

Each lesson:

  • explains important concepts and reviews prior knowledge needed to understand the strategy (What is an algorithm? What are the steps to the division algorithm?)
  • uses the mnemonic "Does McDonald's Sell Cheeseburgers?" to help students remember the steps to long division (divide, multiply, subtract, check, bring down)
  • walks students through several examples, demonstrating with step-by-step animations how to follow the steps to the algorithm to divide
  • demonstrates how to use multiplication to check the answer to a division problem
  • provides multiple practice problems (give students a chance to solve and then click to reveal the solutions and correct answers) with access to FREE printable worksheets

Lesson 1 - Long division algorithm with 2 and 3 digit dividends in which all digits in the dividend are evenly divisible by the divisor (no remainders)

Lesson 2 - Long division algorithm with 2 and 3 digit dividends in which some digits in the dividend are not evenly divisible by the divisor (no remainders)

Lesson 3 - Long division algorithm with 2 and 3 digit dividends with remainders

Lesson 4 - Long division algorithm with 4 digit dividends (with and without remainders)

These slides are fully editable if you need to tweak them to better fit your needs. Be sure to check the preview file for a closer look at this lesson (the Google Slides feature animations that will not work in the PDF preview file, but it still gives you a good idea of what the lesson includes!)

This long division resource is clear, well-organized, and very student-friendly. The step-by-step layout helps students understand the process without feeling overwhelmed, and the consistent format makes it easy for them to build confidence as they practice. I especially appreciated the clear examples and gradual increase in difficulty, which worked well for differentiating instruction. This resource was effective for both whole-group instruction and independent practice, and my students showed improved understanding after using it. I would definitely recommend it to other teachers teaching long division.
