About the store
I have been a high school biology teacher for 34 years! In that time, I have used drawing as a tool to understand concepts. I have also enjoyed making coloring pages and using other coloring books for Biology and Anatomy. Students often say that they can't draw, but find that they begin to do better at it with practice. I have also taught Health and Anatomy and Physiology.

Crayfish anatomy and Simulated Dissection Worksheet

Created by
Biology Buff
This worksheet can be used as a preview or review for the real crayfish dissection or as a stand-alone assignment. The student reads the information, which is presented as if dissecting, and then colors and labels the diagram. It can be used as a sub lesson plan or for a student who has been absent for the dissection.

I use this worksheet usually on the first or second day of school to get the students thinking about skills they will need for a science class such as Biology: observation, reading directions, listening, thinking outside of the box, etc. You can use it for any science class. Just change "Biology" to the name of your class! For those of you who already bought this activity, I have fixed the #6 activity to make it more understandable and have added a key!

NGSS standard 1-LS1-2 asks you to have your students read texts and use media to determine patterns in behavior of parents and offspring that help offspring survive. This little reading Is geared to first grade with 5 examples of how parents care for their young in the animal kingdom. A little question sheet is included with simple questions to answer like big kids do.

This little worksheet/coloring sheet can go along with your owl pellet lab. It explains about the owl's digestion and just where the pellet comes from. Students color as they follow the worksheet. You can have the kids color the sheet if they want to after they finish the required coloring. The answer key is included. Please see my lessons "The Owl's Anatomy 1 and 2, " listed as two separate lessons according to level of students. Level 1 is for grades 3 and 4 while Level 2 would be best fo

Comparative Anatomy of the Human and the Cat

Biology Buff
This worksheet compares the anatomy of the human and cat for students to use as a study aid, dissection guide, or instead of an actual dissection. Students color, label and answer questions. This is the fifth installment in a series of vertebrates and their comparison to humans. By comparing other animals to humans, it helps students to understand the evolution of animals, particularly the vertebrates as they look at the organs that are similar and different, and how these different org

I use this worksheet when I lecture or when I want students to do a research-based homework assignment. It can also be used for a group computer project. Students have to find out about the 5 categories of evidence for evolution, explain how they are considered evidence and give examples.

This chart is very helpful in reviewing the main facts about macromolecules. It can also be used as a lecture tool. To go along with this chart, making molecules in groups from molecule kits or paper pieces is helpful in understanding this topic too. Please see my two macromolecule model labs. The Next Generation Science Standards asks for models and evidence which is featured on this chart and with my molecule labs. Notice on the left column, I have added how to test for each macromolecule

Evolution at Different Scales: Microevolution vs. Macroevolution

In this worksheet/information sheet, I wanted to explain succinctly the difference between microevolution and macroevolution at the end of our unit on evolution. I just wanted to make sure they got it! After reading their answers to the included questions, I feel that this sheet really helped! We used the beetles scenario to understand natural selection, genetic drift, etc. I cut out pictures of beetles and manipulated them under the ELMO when explaining it in lecture.

This worksheet has the students do some research to find out how to solve some problems using nature as the teacher. It explains what biomimicry is and how engineers use it to design in hopes of solving a problem. Interesting for the kids. You could assign this as homework, make-up work, sub lesson, etc. This fits in well with the NGSS requirement that engineering be put into the curriculum.

This worksheet features a diagram of a dissected cat which students will label and color after reading through the information which explains what they would see if they were really dissecting. Students will also answer a set of questions that pertains to the lesson. Answer keys are included. This lesson could be made more difficult or more simple by changing the type of questions asked, or maybe no questions at all? This could be used as a homework assignment, absent during dissection assign

This lab has two parts to it: one is the chicken wing dissection and the other is a simple human muscle action inquiry. This lab can be used instead of an animal dissection or can be used along with a dissection. Some questions are asked at the end of the activity and students are asked to draw, label and color the diagrams. Students will learn about the origin and insertion of muscles, tendons and ligaments, and flexors and extensors. There is also a comparison of the human arm and chicken w

This is one of my paper dissections of animals. This one features the mink, requested by one of my followers. Students color, and cut out organs and then place them on the blank sheet using guide lines as they read the instructions. Students see a mink with ventral side up, and begin to place along the back to the front, so that it is a "backwards" dissection. Students love these dissections. You can use it before, after, or instead of a real dissection. You can use this when you discuss b

This is a re-make of an older version. I have added more tissue types under the 4 main categories of human tissue and have included questions with an answer key. The drawings were done with more precision. I think it's a good introduction to tissues and there is room to make it even more detailed if the teacher wishes to expound on certain tissue types.

This is another installment to my animal anatomy simulated dissection worksheets collection. This time, we get the octopus in all it's anatomical glory. It is similar to the squid which is also in the collection. This worksheet is a bit more detailed than the squid and would be perfect for advanced Biology but you can simplify the questions and not go into detail with the cardiovascular system. This worksheet is for middle school and high school since it is a little more detailed than the one I made for 5th/6th grade. The question has been asked many times by my students: How is a chicken egg made? I decided to make a worksheet that explains the difference between a fertilized and unfertilized egg. You can use this when you talk about human fertilization or when you do a lab on chicken eggs for various reasons.

I will be adding another addition to this worksheet which will show how diabetes affects the homeostatic mechanism of blood sugar.

About the store

Experience

I have been a high school biology teacher for 34 years! In that time, I have used drawing as a tool to understand concepts. I have also enjoyed making coloring pages and using other coloring books for Biology and Anatomy. Students often say that they can't draw, but find that they begin to do better at it with practice. I have also taught Health and Anatomy and Physiology.

Teaching style

I do some lecture, lots of activities and labs and try to involve the students as much as possible in their learning. We use a cornell note type note format with lots of room for drawings and diagrams.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was lucky to be chosen to be a mentor teacher a few years ago. I loved mentoring new teachers, and still do.

My own education history

I have a BS in Biology and a Masters degree in Public Health. My teaching credential is a single subject in Biology.

Additional biographical information

I am a mother of three- two of whom are teachers. My kids always knew that it was the best job in the world. I loved that I could be home in time to be there for my two growing boys, and daughter while they played all of their sports and enjoyed all of their activities. I still think it is the best job in the world.
