Short Vowel Sounds HELP!I have effectively used this as a mnemonic device to help students master short vowel sounds - a skill important for quickly decoding simple CVC words while reading. With older students, I could teach all 5 short vowel sounds at once. Here are the steps I used: 1. "There is only one word for each picture." Make sure students can label/identify each picture with the following 5 words: apple, elephant, in/inside, octopus, umbrella 2. "Which letter does each picture loo

Here is a short, one-page description of an activity that I did with my Kindergarten students this year, on the last day before our winter holiday began. It was a simple, relatively low prep, easy and fun activity... perfect for teachers like me who are sometimes not prepared to tackle building 3D gingerbread houses with their students right before the holidays!

Experience

Teaching style

Whatever works... I'm not committed to any particular style or strategy. I think it's important, however: 1. to know your students well, and 2. to understand and be able to implement multiple approaches... ...whatever works!

Awards & shining teacher moments

I am most proud of having been able to help older children, who had begun to feel defeated by the process of reading, finally begin reading and BELIEVING that they can!

My own education history

Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology, Bachelor of Education degree in Elementary Education, with a minor in Special Education, and Master of Education degree in Special Education (blind/partially sighted students).

Additional biographical information

One of my passions is learning more ways to promote meaningful inclusion of students with special needs and helping others to do the same... one small step, and one person, at a time.
