Basic Skills Checklist for Kinder

I use this checklist to check off what students know or don't know yet. Using pencil allows me to erase and make changes as the year progresses. I can also change skills, or words, each year if necessary, and I can use this as a goal-setting tool with each student. I provide a copy to parents at the end of each 9 weeks so that they know where their child is and where he/she is headed since most of this detailed information is not part of our report card. Weaknesses can be seen at a quick glan

Pink Slip - for missing homework

This is a strategy I got from Harry Wong (great presenter and author!). It's called a Pink Slip, and students fill it out whenever they do not have their homework. I don't listen to excuses, I just have them fill out the form, and I'll look at it later to see what their excuse is. I keep these on file, and they have come in handy for parent conferences (especially if a student is saying they didn't have time to do their homework due to sports or something or the sort).

This survey can be given to students at the end of the year to see how they felt about the quality of your teaching. It asks them to rate your teacher qualities, anonymously, on a scale of never, rarely, sometimes, usually or always. It also provides a section for students to provide their own tips. This survey will not only provide you with valuable feedback about your teaching, it will allow students to feel that their opinion is truly valued by you.

A note to relay to your students where they made a mistake. Have you ever been sitting in bed grading and have to write a paragraph to get across what you need your students to correct? This simple checklist will help you let students know where they made a mistake rather than you having to write a book at the top of their paper. I have provided a Word Document and a pdf for you to edit and/or print out to staple to the top of your student's work.

This is an idea that I adapted from a colleage of mine. I developed this template for Grade 1 and 2 students to use in place of an agenda. These "Fridge Facts" were filled out each Friday and taken home. The Spelling words would be practiced over the weekend and throughout the week. Parents would have an idea about what their childrend were learning about in school and what personal goals they had for the upcoming weeks in class. It is a great way for studnets to take charge of their learni

Learning how to learn is critical for elementary school students. Executive Functioning is the organization of time, space, materials, and mental energy. It is critical to the learning process. PROCESS, PROCESS, PROCESS! The process is as important as the product. Many children do not instinctively know how to, and they need direct instruction to become independent learners. Teachers need to teach them how to learn, facilitate their ability to demonstrate mastery, and Test Be

When the child had zeros on a progress report, I could easily take out the HW excuse forms filled in by the student. It did help the students feel more accountable. You'll need to tweek it to your needs. Enjoy!

This should be given to them after a mid-unit quiz so they can set goals for their performance on a unit assessment. You can see on the second page, or like I use it: the back of the sheet, I provide the standard(s) being assessed and instead of setting a goal like "I will improve from 60% to 80% in standard 7.EE.B.4a by....." students should use the description and verbiage of

I am having my students record their test scores throughout the year to ensure they are learning. This allows the students to practice creating bar graphs (or a line graph) so we can see where the students scores are and where we want them to be. We do not graph the STAAR scores, but we do put them on the top of the page for each student. The students are required to keep each test in a folder in my classroom so we can go over any test at any time. Re-takes of the test are only recorded if the s
