Polynomial Function Project - Roller Coaster

Created by
Algomath
In this project, students learn how to use polynomial function to model roller coaster rides. In this first part, they are given some polynomial functions to find the relative maximum/minimum, increasing/decreasing intervals, x- and y-intercepts, etc. They will explore the average rate of change. In the second part of the project, students are asked design their own roller coaster given some basic criteria. Students should use graphing devices/computer applications to complete this project.

Neighborhood Tours and Piecewise Functions

In this project students will take us on a tour of their neighborhoods. They'll make at least three stops, take pictures, and explain why they chose those locations. After that, they will create a graph of their journey that compares time in minutes to how many blocks they are from home. They will have to use average rate of change over sub-domains to come up with their piecewise graph. After all of that, they will analyze their journey and explain what the domain, range, intervals of increase

Exponential Functions and Grain of Rice Project

This is a differentiated activity incorporating exponential functions and "The Grain of Rice Story." As a class, the story is read in play form. Students are assigned parts to read. Then students are broken into groups designated by readiness. Each group is assigned a task based on the story. All tasks require the groups to make a table, graph, and write an equation based on a situation related to the story read. Tasks increase in difficulty from 1 through 4. Groups must make a poster displaying

Drop It Like It’s Math The Barbie Bungee Challenge

In this hands-on, real-world math activity, students take on the role of entrepreneurs creating a proposal for their own bungee jump company. Working in teams, they brainstorm a company name and business goals, then experiment by dropping a Barbie doll with increasing numbers of rubber bands to simulate a bungee jump. Students collect and analyze data, calculate averages, create scatterplots, and use technology to generate a line of best fit. Using linear regression, they make predictions to
