In this project, students learn how to use polynomial function to model roller coaster rides. In this first part, they are given some polynomial functions to find the relative maximum/minimum, increasing/decreasing intervals, x- and y-intercepts, etc. They will explore the average rate of change. In the second part of the project, students are asked design their own roller coaster given some basic criteria. Students should use graphing devices/computer applications to complete this project.

Plight of the Adelie Penguins: An Exponential Decay Activity

Created by
Joseph Huston
Plight of the Adelie Penguins is an environmental/threatened species themed activity to demonstrate how algebraic exponential functions can be used to model real world situations. There has been an 85 percent decrease in the Adelie penguin population along the western Antarctic Peninsula since 1974. The population size of one such colony of Adelie Penguins is modeled by an exponential decay equation. In this activity, your students will work together to: * Use replacement values to evaluate

Polynomial Roller Coaster Project

This project can be used in an Algebra 2 or Pre-Calculus (CP or Honors) class. This project uses students creativity along with their knowledge of analyzing polynomial graphs to create a polynomial roller coaster. The Math: Students will create the equation in factored form (this is to ensure that have the correct number of zeros). Students will then rewrite the equation in standard form (for honors I have had them multiply the polynomial by hand & for CP I have had students use an online
