Input/Output Tables (Function Machines)

This is a fantastic PowerPoint that walks through Input/Output tables. There are 15 different example tables that students will be engaged in completing. 10 of them students are asked to find the rules, 3 students are asked to find the missing outputs, and the last 2 students are asked to find the missing inputs. The answers are on the next slide so students can easily check their work. This would work great for whole group, small group, or a center! On the last slide is a link to the recor

This activity looks at a realistic data set and walks the student through constructing a frequency table and histogram using Microsoft Excel. It should be noted that Excel is not the best software package for creating histograms, but because it one of, it not the most widely used software package for data storage and presentation in business, it is important to know how to create professional-looking and statistically accurate graphics using this tool. There are two different ways to constru

Analyzing Tables with CASIO Graphing Calculator (Linear Functions)

Basic Linear Functions are a big topic in Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. If you are looking for a PowerPoint to lead your students through the procedures to enter a table, graph the data, and write the expression (or equation) using the CASIO graphing calculator, HERE IT IS! The examples start leading the students with 'baby' steps, but as the PowerPoint progresses the students are offered the chance to progress more independently. The examples are real-world and engaging. Once the students master t

Finding Inverses from Graphs and Tables

This activity is designed to have the students practice finding the inverse of a function for specific values from graphs or tables. In this way students can gain a better understanding of inverse functions. Prerequisites 1. Students have learned the basics of functions 2. Students have learned functional notation 2. Students understand the definition of inverse functions 3. Students know how to read graphs. 4. Students know how to graph by hand 5. Students know to to find the c

Use these pages for keeping record of your students input and output function machines. I have the students make function machines out of cartons and then make 15 cards to go in them. They have to decide what the input will be, what the function will be, and what the output will be based on the function (or the rule). The second page is for them to use when they trade and answer another students function machine questions. I used small note cards for the actual cards they put into the function

Function Tables and Patterns lesson plans and materials

I attached basic lesson plans that match with the materials for teaching function tables and patterns. I use the following rule while teaching: Using a function table, find the differences between the in and out numbers. If they are the same, it’s an addition or subtraction rule. If they differences are different, it’s a multiplication or division rule.
