This activity packet can be used for guidance lessons, small group, read aloud activities, literature circles, sub work and more! Growth Mindset is a positive way of thinking. When someone laments, “Well, I’m just bad at Math!” or “I am terrible at cartwheels!”, the growth mindset approach would be to help the person look at their "temporary" short comings a different way. A growth mindset lets a person figure out the next step in his/her journey towards success and helps the learner take owne

Help them learn ethos, pathos and logos with these activities. I remember learning about persuasive appeals in 7th and 8th grade and again, in more depth, in college. I think it is fascinating to delve into the psychology behind how advertising companies and businesses can cause certain emotions in con

Coding is such a fun way to use problem solving and critical thinking! These 3 activities have the students read a map and navigate themselves to different locations. They will draw the rectangles from the tool box in the work space area to navigate themselves on a field trip. This is a great introduction to coding and these activities also focus on map skills! I created this assessment when my class was working on our "Community Helpers unit in Social Studies. All of the similes and metaphors are about fire fighters and helping the community. However; even if your class is not focusing on community helpers, this printable is still great practice. 3 sections of figurative language: 1. Determine the similes from the metaphors. 2. Re-write metaphors to make them similes. 3. Explain the metaphor and justify the comparison being presented. *I extende

About the store

Experience

I am starting my 15th year as an educator, however I have worked with children for 3 years in Montessori before this, as well. Currently, I teach 1st and 2nd grade ELA and SS. I have taught Health/Tech to K-5, 1st and 3rd grade self contained and also 4th grade self contained. I have also taught 7th and 8th grade Reading/Literature.

Teaching style

Our classroom, the students and mine, is a learner centered area where we focus on becoming sound problem solvers thorough the use of higher level questions, activities, and also by having growth mindsets. We may not know the answer or "stink at reading", but we just do not know the answer YET and stinking at reading is a temporary, easy fix with a positive growth mindset.

Awards & shining teacher moments

My published short stories and poetry can be found in: Perspectives Literary Magazine (2000) Inkling Literary Magazine (2005) Volt Literary Magazine (2011)

My own education history

I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing from the University of Houston in 2010. I have a minor in History.

Additional biographical information

Being a teacher has its definite perks, such as giving us this invitation to join our students on their journey through understanding. I could not imagine holding another position, as my career, that would carry as much meaning. I am a mom to a kind and creative 11 year old person. :) I love working with and educating kiddos and learning from them too!
