I taught social studies for 2 years at a middle school in Aiken, SC, teaching both 6th and 8th grade. I currently teach 5th grade science in Clemson, SC. This is my 3rd year as a 5th grade teacher.
Want to engage your students as you introduce them to the basics of the periodic table. This is an enrichment activity catches the attention of my 5th grade students each year. All you need is 3 different colors of hole punches. The best place to find these are the teacher workroom! Or, I recruit a few students to punch holes until their hands are tired! Let the fun begin.
Prior to this activity, introduce students to the concept of parasites and hosts. At the beginning of this activity, review various examples of parasites that students are familiar with and ones they are not familiar with. Students will create their own parasite and brainstorm the information that makes their organism a parasite. Students will display the following information the provided poster.
The Scientific Method student packet guides students through each step of the scientific method. The packet provides students with the opportunity not only to learn about the steps, but to also practice most of those steps. I have provided for you the packet, a PowerPoint presentation that guides students through the packet, and a PowerPoint presentation with the answers filled in the blanks. In my classroom, I am able to use my Promethium board to write the answers in the blankets. I prefer
This is an activity I use in my classroom to introduce students to the idea of classifying parts of an ecosystem as living and nonliving or biotic and abiotic. I also use it as a review before quizzing or testing the students on this information. I provided 12 cards with pictures and descriptions.
Before Class:
Cut out the activity cards and place in a Ziploc bag. For extended use of cards, print on cardstock or glue on construction paper and laminate the cards.
During Class:

Elementary students of any age love creating the classic paper chains that teachers make to countdown the days until Christmas or the end of the school year. In this lesson students will get to create their own chain as a visual learning tool to remember the key components of any food chain in any ecosystem. I have provided background information, a set of directions, a student handout with chain links, and a sample sheet of what the students’ sheet should look like before they cut the chain l
Do you want to engage your students from day one in science? I begin the year of science with the activities I have detailed in this document. These activities will help to peak students’ interest in science from day one. For each of the activities, I have provided links to documents, websites, and videos. To save on copies, I have my students complete all of these activities in their science journal. Every classroom is different, so please feel free to modify these activities for your use.
This is an excellent beginning of the year activity to get students thinking about having a successful year in any class. Students write their own recipes for a successful year. Students are challenged to think about “ingredients” to being successful in your class.
My students enjoy creating these recipes the second day of school. I post them in the classroom as a reminder to the students of the expectations they set for themselves. I would suggest doing a rough draft on a sheet of noteboo
