Classroom management is not always easy. If you are feeling tired of catching bad behavior, and stressed out about speaking to parents about problems their children are having, here is a solution to expensive or cumbersome systems of behavior incentives. Catch a child being good! This "happy note" can be sent home to one child per day. It gives children something to strive for, and it helps build rapport with parents who get nervous about how teachers perceive their children. Tips f

Has the role of "Computer Teacher" been thrust upon you? Here is a list of computer skills that I, a regular classroom teacher, developed for my fourth graders. There is a mix of basic keyboarding skills, internet know-how, and navigating Windows. These are the basic skills that many students will already know (which lends itself very well to peer teaching) but students who have limited computer access might not have mastered. Tip:Instead of printing this list for each student, I like to

Do you have a group of students who really struggle with organization this year? Do your students lose their papers frequently, forget to bring home papers, or take a long time to get their materials out of their desks because their desks are a mess? Do you go into your students' desks to find a paper for them after school only to find 6 extra reading books, notebooks, or empty food wrappers? If so it may be time to teach the kids exactly what a neat desk looks like and how to achieve

Do you do Morning Meeting with your class? Does your class LOVE the "share" portion of Morning Meeting? I used to think this "Show and Tell" stuff was too babyish for my fourth graders, but now I feel like there's never enough time for all the kids to be heard. It's getting to the point where we have to have a weekly sign up. This product has a sign up sheet for the week. It's designed to save space (a bulletin board was not an option for me). Just make your copies and keep them on a

About the store

Experience

I have taught fourth grade for 9 years in public school and third grade in a charter school for 3 years. Prior to my full time teaching career I was a paraprofessional for a teacher of the deaf for grades 1 and 2 for a year, and a preschool teacher for 2 years.

Teaching style

I am pragmatic so I can meet the needs of my students. I teach my fourth graders about working in groups so they can learn social skills as well as academics. I enjoy the balanced literacy reading and writing program. Some experts who have influenced me are John Collins and Lucy Caulkins. In math I use a combination of note taking and math games to promote understanding of vocabulary and principles as well as practice for applying skills. My district has also recently adopted the Math In Focus (Singapore Math) program. In science and social studies I teach research skills to enhance students' writing as well as reading to learn new information since.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was awarded grant money that funded the purchase of science materials for 6 classrooms at my school in October of 2012.

My own education history

Bradford College: BA in Psychology, minor in Education; Lesley University: MA in Education

Additional biographical information

I have served on district-wide literacy and science curriculum committees for several years. I have served on school-wide literacy team for several years. I also served as the Second Step (emotional curriculum) school-wide lead teacher.
