"Sugar" is a great movie to show spanish 1 or 2 classes. It is about Miguel Santos who comes to the US to play baseball and send money back to help his family. He struggles with language barrier, and different social cues. Eventually he finds his dream of being a major league baseball player to much and goes to NY to find work. There he finds work and a group of rejected spanish baseball players who have created a team of their own.
This is great to show while giving oral assessments.

This 6 page packet includes a plethora of up to date statistics and information regarding Spanish speakers in the USA. Much of it is from the 2010 census. There are places for the kids to answer questions, make predictions, and write their thoughts in regards to learning Spanish. Why is it important? How could it benefit you now, in 25 years, etc. It also briefly discusses globalization and why knowing Spanish is beneficial.

This Spanish article is written about Mexico Independence day.
It discusses the events that led to Spanish control over the indigenous people led by Hernan Cortez.
Three centuries later Napoleon invaded Spain. This motivated many of the Criolles to start a revolution. The war was started by Father Hidalgo when he rang a bell and called that everyone would fight.
Also briefly read how "el grito de dolores" is still celebrated today in Mexico as they shout "Viva Mexico!"
