Academic Talk Class Discussion Rules

Created by
Anna O'Connell
This chart lists norms for academic class discussions that help students ensure that the conversation is respectful, on-topic, and based on textual or other evidence. It's a great tool for helping students with CCSS Speaking and Listening Standards. I created this chart for grades 9-10, but it could easily be used for any middle or high school classes. Note: this will be most useful for discussions based on texts in subjects in the humanities.

Summarizing Lesson

This is a very basic outline of a one-day lesson for a Reading class on summarizing. I created it for a 9th grade remedial reading class with students reading on 2nd-6th grade levels. It could certainly be used with younger grades as well.

Grade Change Contract

Contract for making up work from a previous marking period in order to change a students' grade. Could be used for missing assignments, etc. I've required signatures from student, parent, teacher, and administrator, but these can be modified.

Teaching style

I believe that learning should be engaging - everyone has an innate desire to learn, even if school sometimes suppresses it. If we can make learning transparent and engaging, all learners can be successful!

Additional biographical information

While I continue to work with teachers and students in the upper grades, which I love, I also do a lot of work with my 5-year-old son at home to support his areas of interest and fan his natural spark of curiosity. So I'll share things I create from both areas!
