These students, and many of my native English speakers, struggle with how to differentiate between the question words. This PowerPoint presentation is pre-loaded with one slide per day for 8 weeks. Each slide contains instructions for the morning along with a thought provoking creative writing prompt. Students cut and paste to sort Long O words by pattern, then read the list to a friend. Students may also take home the completed sort to share with their parents and to use for studying. -Recently updated to ensure that there is the exact number of words per pattern to fill up the page, and also to delete doubles.

This vocabulary Graphic organizer is awesome for ELLs. It asks them to describe a new word using all five senses. I have used this organizer for all my students, gifted, ESE, ESOL, etc. They all love this break in the monotony of copying definitions into a vocabulary notebook.

These posters demonstrate the most common long vowel patterns learned in 1st/2nd grade. I pasted these onto the bottom of my Harcourt sound/spelling cards that I put on my wall. They are clearer and larger than most of the sound/spelling cards that come with curricula. You could also laminate them, cut them apart and use them as a sound/spelling match up center.

This is a blank/editable form to take attendance and lunch count each day. I copy a big stack and put them on a clip board, each day the students sign in as they come in the door. This way, I can quickly look over it once all the kids are here and send in my absences/lunch count.
