Avery Learning Lab

This activity is similar to a lab and is designed to be done in groups. You will need any type of cereal with more than one color in it, a hard candy such as M & M's or Smarties, vinegar, and baking soda for the activity. Students will use these items following the instructions given, to figure out whether each combination is a physical or chemical change. A great simple lab about how temperature, size, and volume can effect the rate of a reaction. This lab is done using Alka-Seltzer tabs (or other effervescent tabs). It includes the data tables and Analysis and Conclusion questions. It was originally designed to be done in groups but it can be done by individual students.

Fantastic Lab that students love and is one of my favorites! Since I always do these two together you get two labs together. The first is a lab to demonstrate Osmosis. You use eggs that have been soaked in vinegar to dissolve the shell, then soak them in other liquids. The results really bring home how water moves in and out of a membrane. Basic Power Point on trophic levels. Briefly covers what each level is ex. producer, primary consumer, etc. Has several visuals of trophic pyramids. Also uses a visual to demonstrate the loss of energy at each level (left with 10% of previous level's energy). There is a slide that asks the student to come up with their own pyramid as well.

Basic Power Point about Matter. Includes some vocabulary, a drawing of the Atom, States of Matter, and some of the scientists who influenced the discovery of the atom as we know it today.

This activity gives students a chance to take pieces of evidence and form a hypothesis. In the teacher instructions you start out with a sentence that you will cut up into its word pieces. Groups of students are given the pieces, but are only allowed to look at a few at a time. The students then work as a group to try to come up with the original sentence, as more words are slowly revealed to them.
