Instructional Strategies Toolbox

This is a selection of effective and engaging instructional strategies. They are arranged into four categories: Discussion Strategies, Differentiation Strategies, Formative Assessment Techniques, and Student Self-Assessment Strategies. I printed each category on a different color of cardstock, laminated them, and put them on a binder ring. When I'm writing lesson plans, if I notice that I need a formative assessment or I need to differentiate an activity, I can flip through the cards for insp

Georgia Teacher Keys Effectiveness System Labels for portfolio

This is a set of printable labels aligned to the new TKES teacher evaluation system in Georgia. After participating in a pilot year, I wanted to ensure that my documentation would be easily recognized. These labels can be used with Avery 5979 labels or any comparable labels. There are 14 pages, and one set of the labels mentioned has 15 pages. I have begun compiling a portfolio similar to the Teacher Work Sample that I completed in graduate school, and these, printed on NEON labels and stuck

Sideways Notes- Template for Structured note-taking

This is a template for note-taking that is specifically geared towards students who otherwise will copy notes verbatim and struggle with evaluating info for importance. This template is designed for History but can be modified for other contents. I assigned this method of note-taking to my high school students with Lexile scores less that 1000. I also use a modified version of Cornell notes for my middle group and I teach outlining to my students who are capable of successfully using a more c

Modified Cornell Notes Template

This is a modified version of Cornell notes. I have three groups in my class, and note-taking methods are assigned based on Lexile levels. The tier with the lowest Lexiles uses the most structured format, available as my Sideways Notes Template. The Modified Cornell is less structured but provides more guidance than simply outlining. Using Data in the Classroom- Practical Strategies used by a Classroom Teacher

In my seventh year of teaching I was asked to lead two Professional Development sessions sharing with my colleagues the various methods I use to analyze assessment data and adjust my instruction. I teach the students how to analyze their data as well, and it becomes part of our routine. The strategies set forth by this presentation contributed to US History EOCT pass rate gains from 47% to 71% in one school year. I use USATestprep.com for US History Test prep and this form allows students to use the "Report Card" feature in order to reflect upon their strengths and weaknesses in order to better prepare themselves for the US history End of Course test.

Experience

I began teaching in 2008 and my experience has been an adventure! I have taught: AP US History, AP World History, Honors World History, Dual Enrollment Economics (ECON 1101), Dual Enrollment US History (HIST 2111 and HIST 2112), American Literature, World Literature, 6th Grade Social Studies, 6th grade ELA, World History, US History, Psychology, Sociology, Current Issues, American Government, US and World Affairs, SAT Prep, and Examining the Teaching profession.

Teaching style

When teaching a CRCT or End of Course Test class, I rely heavily on Interactive Notebooking to blend traditional techniques with differentiated and scaffolded Best Practices, including Marzano's strategies. When teaching courses that do NOT have a state test, I am in my happy place and use Project Based Learning. Regardless of my courses, I use the principles of Wiggins and McTighe's Understanding by Design.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I have been honored to be chosen as STAR Teacher twice.
