A Play, The Coercive Acts and the First Continental Congress

I love using this when we are in our Road to Revolution unit. It is a fun way to learn about the punishments of the Coercive Acts and the emergency meeting of the Continental Congress. I organize a table in the middle of the room with a Union Jack flag sitting somewhere on it. I make the table look official with some other props, too. Off to the side I put a chair for my "throne". The King and Baines stay in that area. The Members of Parliament sit around the table first. They change places wi

If you teach about the Road to Revolution in your class, this is a great way to get your students involved and engaged when you reach the Tea Act of 1773 and the Boston Tea Party 1773. Having students reenact history is an excellent way for them to "experience" what events were like. This is a great example. This play was written using eyewitness accounts and other excellent sources including information from the Boston Tea Party museum. If ever in Boston it is a must do! You even get to throw

The First Americans, A Play About The Bering Land Bridge (Native Americans)

This is a short play about the most well-known migration theory concerning Native Americans. If you are teaching about the origin of Native peoples in America, this is great way to help introduce the topic of the Bering Land Bridge theory. The play will take about 5-10 minutes. It is meant as an enhancement to a lesson. It's great to get students involved and engaged in class. This offers that opportunity. Enjoy and please let me know what you think! Check out the other plays, simulations

Here is a skit I use when we are learning about the Middle Colonies in my classroom. It is a great way to enhance any lesson about the Middle Colonies either to introduce some of the characteristics of this region or reinforce what has been taught. All of my skits are written to engage students and get them thinking. Most contain a little bit of humor, as well. This one does. If you'd like to see all of my plays, skits, re-enactments, simulations and other lesson starters please visit my store

The Great Age of Exploration - The Crusades and Trade with the East! A Play

A great skit to help introduce some of the reasons why there was an Age of Exploration. During the Crusades, a trade relationship develops between points in the middle east and with some Italian city-states. Of these, Venice benefited the most and will boast the largest market in Europe at this time. This skit helps explain how this develops in a humorous way. A great lesson starter! Have fun!

Teaching Econ is fun! A Great Opportunity Cost Introduction Lesson

This is one of the lessons that my students find most exciting!Opportunity Cost is one of the core principles of economics that I introduce to my students. Although this is an introductory lesson, I’m sure it can be adapted to whatever your needs may be. I begin with a question for students as they enter the room. The question requires students to make a choice. After everyone has had a chance to see the question, we discuss it for a moment. For my classes, this is a review of an earlier lesso

The "Ancient Ones", a play about the Ancient Pueblo (Anasazi)

Created by

I created this play for my classroom to engage my students more as we learned about Pre-Columbian civilizations, in this case the Ancient Pueblo. This play takes about 10-15 minutes to do and is meant as a supplement to your lesson. For this activity, I make a copy for each student. As the actors are doing the play, I have the other students use a highlighter and highlight any of the key words that we have already learned about the Anasazi, through our lesson, homework and discussion. This work

If your classroom is like mine, you believe learning is best by doing. Using plays, simulations and reenactments allows students to experience their learning targets/objectives. Plus, it is fun! I use this play during an Industrial Revolution unit in my economics class. I use it to supplement what we are learning at that time. It takes about 10-15 minutes for the whole activity, including the discussion. It is a great way to learn about some of the revolutionary changes occurring at that time.

Reader's Theater! Are you looking to enhance your lesson about the Pilgrim Story? This is a play that I have used for years in my classroom. It explains why the Pilgrims were in Holland, why they came to North America, events on board ship, and what happened after they arrived. This takes about 15-20 minutes to complete and your students will love it! Enjoy! :-) If you enjoyed this play, check this out: Plays and skits for early American History - Plymouth to the American Revolution
