A Play, The Coercive Acts and the First Continental Congress

Created by
Brian Markwald
I love using this when we are in our Road to Revolution unit. It is a fun way to learn about the punishments of the Coercive Acts and the emergency meeting of the Continental Congress. I organize a table in the middle of the room with a Union Jack flag sitting somewhere on it. I make the table look official with some other props, too. Off to the side I put a chair for my "throne". The King and Baines stay in that area. The Members of Parliament sit around the table first. They change places wi

If you teach about the Road to Revolution in your class, this is a great way to get your students involved and engaged when you reach the Tea Act of 1773 and the Boston Tea Party 1773. Having students reenact history is an excellent way for them to "experience" what events were like. This is a great example. This play was written using eyewitness accounts and other excellent sources including information from the Boston Tea Party museum. If ever in Boston it is a must do! You even get to throw

The First Americans, A Play About The Bering Land Bridge (Native Americans)

This is a short play about the most well-known migration theory concerning Native Americans. If you are teaching about the origin of Native peoples in America, this is great way to help introduce the topic of the Bering Land Bridge theory. The play will take about 5-10 minutes. It is meant as an enhancement to a lesson. It's great to get students involved and engaged in class. This offers that opportunity. Enjoy and please let me know what you think! Here is a skit I use when we are learning about the Middle Colonies in my classroom. It is a great way to enhance any lesson about the Middle Colonies either to introduce some of the characteristics of this region or reinforce what has been taught. All of my skits are written to engage students and get them thinking. Most contain a little bit of humor, as well. This one does. If you'd like to see all of my plays, skits, re-enactments, simulations and other lesson starters please visit my store

I use this play to help further student's understanding about the important contributions of the Iroquois Confederacy. This is a great way to introduce the Grand Council of Peace and how it worked. Enjoy! Oh, and, remember, I always add a touch of humor to my plays. PS - I use this in my American History classroom. But, it could also be used for civics/government.

A great skit to help introduce some of the reasons why there was an Age of Exploration. During the Crusades, a trade relationship develops between points in the middle east and with some Italian city-states. Of these, Venice benefited the most and will boast the largest market in Europe at this time. This skit helps explain how this develops in a humorous way. A great lesson starter! Have fun!

This is a great play to help introduce Adam Smith or characteristics of the Free Market system. The play focuses on the life of Adam Smith. It ends by focusing on his ideas for a Free Enterprise system and how it was different from the Mercantilist system of his day. This takes about 20 minutes to do. Plus, you will want to give some time to debrief. In my classes, I have my students take some time to write a journal reflection on what they learned while performing the play. Have fun! And, I

I just created this brief, fun activity to use for introducing scarcity in my economics classes. We are focusing on the 1st Core Principle of Economics - People Choose! This was an engaging way to introduce this concept. This takes about 15-20 minutes depending on how much time you want to give the groups. I used this to begin my lesson. After forming groups, I let them work on their plan of what they are going to do. After about 10 minutes of discussion, they stand to present their "plan

I use the Magna Carta play to help introduce the important topic of the Magna Carta. Currently, I am using this as part of an American History classroom. We are learning about the Roots of Representative Government. Students learn about the "rights" written in the Magna Carta. However, this resource can be used in many different ways with othe

Here is an interesting way to get your students involved in learning about the importance and tragedy of King Philip's War. This product contains a lesson on the history of the conflict and gives the students a chance to experience what happened by playing the King Philip's War game. All of this can be done in one 60-minute lesson. Of course, you can tailor things to fit any time you like! I love getting my students actively engaged in the classroom, and what better way than by reenacting history? This skit brings to life the dramatic events of the summer of 1588, showcasing the importance of England’s victory over the Spanish Armada in the English Channel. There are many roles for your students. And if you have students that are less inclined to volunteer for skits, they can be the English sailors/soldiers that cheer Queen Elizabeth. For added fun, they can throw "paper balls" at

A Play. It is also on the TPT site. ***This is a light-hearted and fun way to learn about the revival of towns and trade in Europe in helping bring about the Great Age of Exploration (one day) and the decline of Feudalism. This is part of the French and Indian War College Simulation which is also available on this site BUT it works well as a stand alone lesson, too. OverviewThe main focus of the lesson is on the Indian way of fighting. The French called it “La Petite Guerre” (small war). Students will also learn how the British were slow to understand this way of fighting a war. The video clip als

This is one of the lessons that my students find most exciting!Opportunity Cost is one of the core principles of economics that I introduce to my students. Although this is an introductory lesson, I’m sure it can be adapted to whatever your needs may be. I begin with a question for students as they enter the room. The question requires students to make a choice. After everyone has had a chance to see the question, we discuss it for a moment. For my classes, this is a review of an earlier lesso

The play has information about his life and his ideas. Marx talks about everything from his childhood to being thrown out of countries for his writings and ideas. He also explains the four stages of a communist revolution. I always add a touch of humor to my plays. Students enjoy them and it gives them a chance to expe

We had a TON of fun with the skit. Besides the fun, it also accomplished introducing the 3 C's of a person's credit score. The skit will take no more than 5-10 minutes. This play takes about 10-15 minutes to do and is meant as a supplement to your lesson. For this activity, I make a copy for each student. As the actors are doing the play, I have the other students use a highlighter and highlight any of the key words that we have already learned about the Anasazi, through our lesson, homework and discussion.
