Pythagorean Theorem Project (Fencing a yard)

Created by
Caleb Wiles
This project introduces students to a real world problem using the pythagorean theorem. Students are asked to find the perimeter of their large yard and compare price quotes from two companies who have made a bid for the job. The work is relatively simple and is perfectly suited for Algebra I and Geometry students. It's a short project that could even be given for a homework assignment or in-class activity. The topics covered include the pythagorean theorem, perimeter, plotting points, and

Classroom warm-ups - logic puzzles - bell ringers

This is a collection of warm-up/bell ringer activities meant for middle school and high school students. This Powerpoint Presentation is ideal for teachers with access to a SMARTboard, Molbile Presenter, or a television screen or projector that will display what is on the teacher's computer. The questions are applicable to almost any class, but due to the problem solving nature of the questions, math teachers should definitely take note. The questions are designed to get students in the rig

Linear Programming Project - Algebra II

This linear programming project gives students a chance to apply the concepts they learn in class to a real world advertising problem. The document includes specific, clear steps to help students through the work as well as an answer key for the teacher. I've also included an enrichment activity for advanced students. The project was created by Caleb Wiles for a culminating activity to the systems of equations section in his Algebra II class.

"Shade It" lyrics (Math Graphing Song)

I rewrote the lyrics to the popular song "Shake It" by Metro Station for my Algebra I students. The new words describe the process of graphing lines and linear inequalities. My singing voice leaves a lot to be desired, but the math content is solid and the kids thought it was hilarious! The students had a BLAST making the music video. Please check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eiwi3FvQumU Feel free to pass it around as much as you like!

Geometer's Sketchpad Activities

This is a bundle of 9 student activities for Geometer's Sketchpad. The instructions go over EXACTLY what to do and have step-by-step illustrations. I created these activites because all of the other Sketchpad projects I found assumed that the students were already competent with the program. These instructions do not assume prior knowledge. Each one can be completed in around a half hour or so. My Geometry students loved the time we spent working in the computer lab on Geometer's Sketchpa

Course Handbook (syllabus) - Algebra II

This is the course handbook I pass out to students on the first day of my Algebra II class, although it could be used for almost any math class. You probably won't want to use what I have word for word, but I am sure you will pick up a few ideas for your own classroom. First impressions are very important. This document shows my students immediately that I am organized and that I mean business. It also helps them feel at ease because they learn very quickly exactly what is expected in my c
