This lesson is designed to teach students about word choice and identify the tiers of words that can be used when writing. Weekly vocabulary words could also be added to the graphic organizer.

Reading Comprehension Activity: If You Lived 100 Years Ago
This activity consists of 10 discussion cards from the book If You Lived 100 Years Ago by Anne McGovern (part of the If you series published by Scholastic).
Duplicate and have the students cut apart the cards. In groups the students can pass out the cards and take turns reading a card and then discussing what the answer is from the book. If several copies of the book are available each group could have their own book to use.

Root Words at Work: Help Students Understand Words in all Subject Areas!
Students use the printable to write the root word, its meaning and brainstorm words that share the common root.
This strategy can be used in science, social studies with technical vocabulary from a unit of study.

Teaching style
Margaret and Dawn believe children should be engaged, providing students with lifelong learning skills. We have active, productive, organized classrooms, focusing on differentiating instruction. We keeping current in best practices.
Awards & shining teacher moments
Margaret has received National Board Certification. Dawn was presented the Presidential Award for Teaching Elementary Mathematics. She was also selected the Agriculture Teacher of the Year in the state of Oregon, and a 2019 National Excellence in Teaching Agriculture Awardee.
My own education history
Margaret graduated from San Diego State with a Bachelor Degree in Liberal Studies. She did her student teaching in the Santee School District in San Diego, California and received her Teaching Certification. She received her National Board Certification in Literacy. Dawn received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture Education from the University of Nevada Reno. She did her student teaching in Wells, Nevada and received her Teaching Certification. She also received her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction.
