Analyzing Graphs

Students are asked to abstract certain information from the shown real life graph. For instance, identify the y-intercept but also be able to express what it actually means. There is a great deal of writing with this activity as many students are usually able to find the y-intercept and slope, but have no real sense of meaning behind it. This activity will help students make those connections.

Linear Equation Relay Race

You can use this activity individually and/or in pairs. Students will start with the equation in the top right corner. Solve for the missing variable. Students will then apply their answer to solve their next missing variable. I use this activity in small groups. I have one student be the solver for the first box, while the other students may only think aloud and/or express disagreements they may have.

Equivalency Puzzle

Teachers will need to cut up the puzzles prior to students using this activity. I strongly recommend copying on card stock and laminating so you may use for years to come with your students once you cut them up. Students work on building their %-Decimal-Fraction triangular puzzle. Students enjoy the activity without even realizing that they are practicing math!
