This home projects explores the fairy tale genre. Students are required to read a fairy tale & create a poster identifying fairy tale elements. Elements included are multiples of 3's and 7's, special "magical" words, good/evil characters, magic, royalty, a problem & a solution. This is a 2 or 3 day exploration of fossils. It culminates in a make-your-own fossil activity that students of all ages will LOVE! Wow! Teach creative word choice within your Fairy Tale unit! This graphic organizer encourages students to read one or more fairy tales and search for an adjective describing a noun. Using sensory imagery, they will write and illustrate in a box for sight, sound, etc. My kids LOVED this activity and had so much fun searching for noun/adjective combos. Kids and teachers alike adore Kevin Henkes! This activity has students create their own design for a Kevin Henkes mouse like Lily, Wemberly, Owen, Victor, etc. Students plan their drawing by thinking about character traits. My second graders LOVED this and it was a great culmination to our Kevin Henkes author study.

This "fancy folder" book project uses a standard manila file folder as its base. Each side of the folder asks students to break down the story elements of a science fiction or fantasy book. This project can be easily modified to meet your students needs.

Create a fraction caterpillar! This wonderful math activity for primary students provides a visual model for fractions. Mini Author study! This long term homework project allows individual students to complete an author study of their own. After modeling the procedure of an author study at school, students choose an author and read 3-4 picture books. It naturally lends itself to differentiating because each student reads books at their own level. They will then write a letter to the author. Specific guidelines, student directions and a rubric are included.

Find 3 items that can be measured for their LENGTH, WIDTH, or VOLUME! This is a great homework activity for elementary school students. It's far more exciting and interactive than a measurement worksheet. Students will search around their homes and record on the attached sheet 3 items they have discovered. This project can be easily adapted to an in-class activity where students search the school for items with recorded measurements.

This graphic organizer is for a unit on colonial life. It also meets Common Core objectives for non-fiction literacy. Over the course of two or three class periods, the students research information about their chosen colonial trade. My students love to buddy-read! They often need structure and guidelines for true partner reading to be effective and successful.
