Observe the water cycle in your classroom. Using a sandwich bag and colored water watch the water form vapor and then "rain" inside the baggie. Students love this!
This download includes directions and a two page, detailed observation sheet to record the progress four times.
My class said this was their favorite activity of the year. I hang the baggies on the window facing our school courtyard and always get compliments on how appealing
Using the poem Bleezer’s Ice Cream by Jack Prelutsky, students will create their own mixed-up, outrageous ice cream flavors. They write about them using "juicy, delicious, disgusting" adjectives. The activity culminates with an ice cream cone drawing activity where they draw their own weird flavors. It is an uproariously good time and engages even the most reluctant participators!
This activity can be used with students of any grade. I teach 2-3 but older students read Jack Prelutsky and wi

Easy to laminate and use a vis a vis marker. This document is easily customized for your class. Great for substitute teachers and volunteers to know where to send students at the end of the day.

In this activity, students will roll dice to determine the number of bugs and legs on each bug. They use the enclosed organizer to structure their work. Wow! Teach creative word choice within your Fairy Tale unit! This graphic organizer encourages students to read one or more fairy tales and search for an adjective describing a noun. Critical reading, word choice, fun!!
Kids and teachers alike adore Kevin Henkes! This activity has students create their own design for a Kevin Henkes mouse like Lily, Wemberly, Owen, Victor, etc.
Students plan their drawing by thinking about character traits.
My second graders LOVED this and it was a great culmination to our Kevin Henkes author study.

Create a fraction caterpillar! This wonderful math activity for primary students provides a visual model for fractions.
Students use sticker dots (or colored circle of another type-be creative!) to make a caterpillar. I've sometimes added wiggly eyes and pipe cleaner antennae to make it fun!
The attached recording sheet provides an organizer for them to record the fractional parts of the caterpillar.
I've used this activity with both 2nd and 3rd graders but it can be easily adapted. My ki

Mini Author study! This long term homework project allows individual students to complete an author study of their own. After modeling the procedure of an author study at school, students choose an author and read 3-4 picture books. It naturally lends itself to differentiating because each student reads books at their own level. They will then write a letter to the author. Specific guidelines, student directions and a rubric are included.

Find 3 items that can be measured for their LENGTH, WIDTH, or VOLUME! This is a great homework activity for elementary school students. It's far more exciting and interactive than a measurement worksheet. Students will search around their homes and record on the attached sheet 3 items they have discovered.
This project can be easily adapted to an in-class activity where students search the school for items with recorded measurements.
This graphic organizer is for a unit on colonial life. It also meets Common Core objectives for non-fiction literacy. Over the course of two or three class periods, the students research information about their chosen colonial trade. There are many books and online resources available about a wide variety of colonial trades. The organizer can be modified for many learners. I’ve found this to be a wonderful way to differentiate instruction as there are books available at a wide variety of reading

This is a set of 12 cards with thoughtful questions for guided partner reading. Print on cardstock, cut, laminate & bind on a ring binder. Then when students go off with a buddy, they bring the cards with them and use them to guide a focused book discussion.
