Safety Plan (Two editable versions w/ possible inclusion ideas) for Counsellors

Herein you will find TWO VERSIONS of SAFETY PLANS for your students, to be filled out by a trained professional who has the proper educational training ( e.g., school counsellor or school psychologist). These Safety Plans are GOOGLE DOCUMENTS and, therefore, fully editable, should you need to make any changes ( i.e., local area resources or crisis lines). T Of the two versions, one is a one-pager (which I like for that reason) and the other is a two-pager, and goes into more detail. Also

Student Inventory Worksheet for Personal Strategies to Deal with Anxiety

Students are presenting more and more with anxiety. They often believe they lack any skills to deal with and manage that anxiety. This worksheet, used over three sessions, allows students to realize that they already have a skill-set that they can employ to manage their anxiety. This worksheet is recommended to be used over three sessions, so that students have repeated exposure and repetition of the strategies they have used in the past, they have used recently, and that they may use in the f

Here are two different versions of an Interim / I-Report (Incomplete Report) I have used in my classes. It is a fully editable Word .docx that can be changed to meet your needs. As some students struggle to succeed in a course, this I-Report can be used to help identify those areas / skills / behaviours that require attention in order for the student to have the best chance of success. It goes home to parent / guardians as a formal communication of their child's academic needs and as a way to

Having to make a call to the authorities to report Child Abuse is never an easy call. This resource helps Counsellors, Administrators, Teachers, or other Reporting Adults gather the information they will need to make that report. Note: Please be advised that the reporting adult should not investigate or otherwise question the youth. This can be traumatizing for the youth, as they will need to repeat themselves to the police,

This is a series of appointment slips used to make counselling appointments with your students. The series includes a generic version that you can immediately print off (4 to a page) with no editing required. The others are in Excel format, and you can include counsellors' names, school names, and even include your school logo, if you wish. What I like about these slips is that they act as a communication tool between counsellor and teacher, requiring signatures from each.PROCESS FOR COUNSELLIN

This resource will be useful to counsellors, administrators, learning support teachers, learning integration teachers, or any other role which finds you as case manager for students. In many districts, it is more than an organizational tool; it is a necessity for your record-keeping. Herein are two formats for recording Key Contact Information and then a Contact Log Record. This is useful when writing IEP (Individual Education Plans), taking a student's name to SBT (School-Based Team), or prep

External Credentialing Course History - BC Secondary Counsellors / SIM Clerks

This is a one-pager Google Doc for adding a course history, also known as Credentialling. In my school district, Counsellors complete this form after verifying the student's external credentialing. They then hand it off to the SIM Clerk to be processed and entered for the next TRAX report. In other districts, I know that administrators or records clerks perform this function. Whomever it is, this form provides an organized way for collecting, inputing / data-entering, and tracking external /

Whether as a teacher, a school counsellor, or an administrator, you have likely been asked to provided a reference letter to a student, either for post-secondary education or for a prospective employer. This four-page product creates a valuable teaching moment, and places more responsibility into the hands of the student. When asked for a letter of reference, simply hand the student this document and request that it is filled out. Included is a list of questions that will highlight their stren

Here is a form I use as a Confidential Reference Form. It can be used for Scholarships, Bursaries, Student of the Month/Year, or any other accolade. Used by teachers, counsellors, and administrators alike. While it is designed to be filled in online, it can also be printed on a one page legal-sized piece of paper. What my colleagues have appreciated in this form is that it is not onerous to complete, yet what I like is the essential information is all there in one place. Another related resou

Experience

I have over 20 years teaching experience in high schools, adult ed, university and private tutoring. I have also taught at learning centres for middle school and high school-aged students. Like many English teachers, I teach short stories, novels, Shakespeare, poetry, grammar, essay writing, media studies, and career preparation and planning.

Teaching style

My philosophy of education centres on interdisciplinary studies and the development of critical reasoning skills. I believe that as modern life becomes increasingly complex and interconnected the need to teach how all subject areas interact is ever more important. As such, I habitually infuse my lessons with visual and popular culture, demonstrating how the material is relevant to students’ lives and thereby making it more accessible. Similarly, I contextualize the source material to its socio-political milieu to facilitate learning while students uncover how a text’s meaning changes over time.
