GUMS for Writing

This is a handout for students if you use the "Check your GUMS" verbage when teaching writing. It explains the difference between checking for Grammar, Usage, Mechanics, and Spelling. It also helps parents learn to ask the write questions, and address errors the proper way.

This is a SUPER FUN Thanksgiving activity to complete on Thanksgiving day. I usually assign it as extra credit for students to help their math grade. Students have to track how many calories they eat on Thanksgiving day (from start to finish). I also allow students to follow other family members as well. They have a calorie count list to help them, and then they must fill out the sheet and list what was eaten (+ what time and how many calories). They then total up the calories for the day.

This inventions activity goes along with the Documentary 101 Gadgets that Changed the World produced by the history channel. You can buy it at www.historychannel.org or through amazon. It is very quick and funny, but best of all very highly engaging for kids and sparks excellent conversation so they understand life before the gadget that was invented. I use this to check off the INVENTIONS guidelines I have and then follow it up with the inventions essay the kids have to write. I highly sug

Boston Class Trip

This is the itinerary I created when I took my private school 5th graders to Boston, instead of taking them to Outdoor Ed. It was a fantastic educational trip packed with historical information that really brought the textbooks to life. I've had many people ask me for this itinerary after I took my group, so I am posting it for you. Please free to ask any questions! I also have a lot of support material for the books I created for the kids. I will post that if you show interest. Thanks!

I have never been able to find an essay "edit" worksheet that has functioned the way I want it to. Sometimes the kids don't understand what they're looking for, or the kid doesn't understand what revisions are being asked for. So on my drive to work, I cooked up this little cookie and it worked BETTER than I imagined. It is a simple "yes/no" survey. The peer editor takes the paper and then answers this survey. Parents have also asked for copies when editing their child's work before a major

Thanksgiving Writing Extra Credit Opportunities

This is a writing opportunity in which students gain extra credit points. There are 4 paragraph points, and 2 story prompts. This is targeted towards 5th grade writers, but can be modified to fit grades around that level. Prompts range from why canned food drives are important to a turkey who has an adventure to escape the axe... If you need the product in word format, shoot me an email and I'll email it to you in word format (fonts will be screwy but that's ok)

This is for third graders who are learning the many ways to model multiplication. I make an overhead of this sheet and then the students and I work through it together, showing all the ways multiplication can be modeled.

For all teachers - this absent work system is a life saver! Here's how my absent system worked: 1. I used a large manila envelope, and stuck this sheet to it, then laminated them. I always had about 10 on hand. 2. As worksheets and assignments were handed out in class, I would put the worksheets/activities on the absentee's desk. As the day continued, I would write with a vis a vis marker or an expo pen all the assignments I wanted the student to complete. (Consider this: if it's busy work or

About the store

Experience

10 years and 2 summers. I've done both summers with Kindergarten readiness. 8 years with 5th and 2 years with 3rd.

Teaching style

I am a teacher who will give kids the road map, but they have to do the learning. I am big on group projects, individual projects, peer teaching, active learning, and 21st century learning is one of my specialties.

Awards & shining teacher moments

2010 Teacher of the Year Nominee, Nobel Learning Communities. Field Day Director (we've been on the news, and in the newspaper twice)

Additional biographical information

I love to create. I've taught for a long time, and I am still revamping things to make them more fun, and more interesting to the kids. I am very excited to be apart of this website, as we all know that teachers are HIGHLY underpaid for their time in the industry... All of my docs are in pdf format because I am a freak about great fonts. If you buy my product, but need it edited, please email me and I will email you the word doc (but it will come out with gerbally fonts that can easily be fixed).
