16-19 Commas Quiz II / ACT-SAT-CCR Test Practice

Created by

This 10-question comma quiz targets the 16-19 ACT and CCR grammar standards for commas. This quiz assesses student knowledge of commas used in places, dates, and with titles for people. The quiz is written in ACT-format with a text relating to The Merchant of Venice. I found this to be the best way to test grammar: use a text related to our class reading so that students are engaged in the text while they are also learning more about the class readings. However, the very next year, English 9 w

Quiz on Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer to be used with reading chapters 1-8. 10 true/false, 15 multiple choice, and another five short answer. Even if you want to go with a Scantron and drop the short answer, you've got a 25-question quiz. Or just drop the complete sentence requirement and have students answer right on the scantron. Don't neglect having reading quizzes for books, especially if students are doing independent reading or lit circles. I usually have a couple of versions on hand, as wel

Veterans Day Poem Writing

If you're looking for a 1-2 day assignment to celebrate Veterans Day and poetry, here's a good one. While it's not an entire poetry unit, it focuses on four main poetic devices in order to create a poem that thanks veterans. The hope is that students know someone from the 20+ conflicts listed, but the list also provides a context for the poem, since most students would center their point of view on what they know rather than the experiences of the vets. This part requires group work, online ac

True Meaning of Christmas Double Play - Christian Church Skit for Children

What's better than a skit teaching little kids about the true meaning of Christmas? Two, of course! I was asked if I could write a skit for our Birthday Party for Jesus. It went over very well, so I was asked to write another skit a couple of years later. Both of the skits have the same purpose of presenting the true meaning of Christmas. They were written for a Christian, Lutheran (Missouri Synod) church activity, though I'm sure they would work fine for your church without much effort. These

This is a 10-question, multiple choice quiz on L.8.2a Use punctuation (comma, ellipsis, dash) to indicate a pause or break. This quiz is similar to ACT practice quizzes I've made, and it practices the skills required, but I technically focused more on WHETHER or not a pause was required rather than EXACT pause punctuation. That's because, even English teachers have trouble telling between double-dashes or double-commas, or where a ellipsis might fit better than a dash. Because I was using a te

Whether you're teaching newswriting, media studies, social studies, or creative writing, having students create an intelligent news report is a challenge. I found a method that worked for a number of students, and that was to create a simple outline for them and take the pressure off making a video, even if the result was a video segment. This assignment now includes a sample template, too, but not all students will want or need this extra guidance. Basically, we made radio broadcasts that we l

Students might tell you that a lot of their teachers want to discus differences in gender roles, but this worksheet will still make them think, and you sometimes have to talk about it, especially as those roles change in society and the stories reflecting society. 20 traits for students to rate as more male, female, or neither, along with an explanation of each. A few words to explain. For example: Driving - female - because they get in fewer accidents. (drive fewer miles?) = lower insurance

Whether you're teaching female lit, minority lit, or American Indian (Native American) lit, this story works... just know that Mary Whitebird was not an actual Indian herself, nor is she a woman. Nothing calls attention to a lack of education than misusing commonly misused words in writing. While standards might focus on homophones, this download also presents other commonly misused words. I always told my students that if they could master the appropriate use of these words, they would appear intelligent, and that's sometimes half the battle. I also taught cultural literacy so that students would have a background knowledge in literature and philosophy that we tend to ignore in school

When I was doing some online research before I taught a unit on The Giver, I realized that there were around 10 different categories of perfection, or Utopian views, that seemed to play a role in what I was researching. When we teach Brave New World or Gattaca, we might only focus on a couple of these categories. Any Utopian/Dystopian story can't really cover all of the ways people see perfection, but you can try to do so in this activity. There are a couple of surprising ones on the list, b

I found a list of commonly misspelled words that are often mistaken as being one word or two words. As part of my attempt to help students avoid looking foolish in their writing, I taught the list and created quizzes. While this might not be a specific skill associated with the ACT or other standardized tests, the ability to spell words others often misuse is an important skill. I was also inspired after a student played Journey's Separate Ways music video. I came up with a perfect parody id

I could see it being used in an English classroom discussing reputations or cliques, but it's probably just as well suited as an all-school assignment dealing with cliques or bullying...something guidance counselors or principals might like to use. Experience

Twelve years teaching in a suburban district near Milwaukee.
Check out my own creative writing here My wife taught four years, as well. She taught more of the Advanced classes and less of the creative ones.

Teaching style

Use of technology in the classroom when useful. Taught several classes completely online. Emphasis on Cultural Literacy and background knowledge in order to understand literature and how to write, but also to connect with other classes. My wife was the typical martyr teacher who planned until 7pm on a Friday for the next week. Her lessons are organized and usable out of the box, whereas a teacher might have to step outside the box to see how cool my lessons can be.

Awards & shining teacher moments

My honor was to have students published in my creative writing classes, students who otherwise disliked school or English class to succeed, and for students to tell me today that they remember lessons from over a decade ago. Many of the honors and awards from my past will do little to shape my future, but the fact that people like you are purchasing and using some of these lessons that took me hours upon hours of my own time to create is a great honor. Some of these units were important in the lives of students I was able to reach, and there's magic in a few of the assignments. I just hope that these downloads being here for you can make your life a little easier.
