Scientific Method Experimental Design Activity Learn How to Design a Fair Test

This scientific method lab activity is designed to reinforce the importance of keeping ONE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE in an experiment. The goal is for students to begin to think critically about experimental design and to grasp the importance of holding all conditions constant except the one variable being tested. Students are directed to identify variables and constants, make predictions, summarize results, and analyze experimental design for a very simple "drops on a penny" lab. There are three

Experience

I began my teaching career 22 years ago as an educator in an alternative high school program. I then shifted gears and took a position as a middle school teacher. Teaching middle science was the perfect fit for me. I love the energy and enthusiasm the students bring each day. It is my goal every year to be the teacher that I never had.

Teaching style

The foundation of my approach to teaching is based on high standards and rigorous assignments supported with well-structured classroom lessons. However, I counter balance this approach with heavy doses of comedy, gym, magic, and rock and roll. I strive to help students bridge the gap between classroom lessons and how science works in the real world. Building relationships with students is a cornerstone of my teaching style. It's important for me to know the students beyond their achievement levels.
