If you find Trigonometry repetitive and boring, look no further! This trigonometry scavenger hunt will get students outside, moving around, and engaged. Students begin by building their own sextant to measure angles. You will need: -A protractor -A straw -Tape -String -Small weight, such as a washer Once students have built their sextant, they will go outside and measure objects around the school building. In the worksheet they are measuring a tree, windmill, school sign, basketball hoop, goal

Looking for an activity to get your students engaged and thinking critically? This list of 10 math activities plus 1 bonus general game gets them up and working collaboratively to solve these problems. These activities are low floor high ceiling, allowing students of all skill levels to participate. These are great for the beginning of the year, the beginning of class, or as a challenge day activity. Enjoy!
Do your students struggle with writing equations from word problems? Using these "cheat sheets", students will have step-by-step help for each type of equation. Cut out and paste these to a piece of cardstock or construction paper, then have students write all of the words that mean add/subtract/multiply/divide inside. They then have a safety blanket to use when tackling these kinds of questions. My grade 7's found it very helpful and I noticed their understanding vastly improved.
This simple art project allows students to be creative while still covering the basics of perimeter and area. It is great for both elementary/middle years and high school.
Equations are always challenging for students, especially when they are first introduced. In this activity/project, students plan a road trip using a set budget. They have to choose how many people they will bring, which influences what choices they make for their lodgings, food, and car rental. Three options are given for each category, so students can easily choose. For each category, students must put together an equation to represent the cost. They even explore how to use Google Maps! At the
Students love talking about themselves. :) In this project, students have the opportunity to develop their understanding of number lines and specifically negative and positive integers. Students will choose events that took place in their lives before they were born and afterwards and place these on a number line. Zero will represent when they were born. My students loved learning about each other and sharing baby pictures.
This decimals review project allows student to show their creativity by designing their own restaurant and then sampling the menus of their peers. Students work with adding decimals (menu items), subtracting decimals (discounts), multiplying decimals (multiple orders of the same item), and dividing decimals (dividing the bill amongst a group of people). It is a great way for students to review decimals while learning individually and exploring other peoples' creativity.
This project is intended for grade 9 mathematics but can be used for any grade learning about composite shapes. This hands-on project allows students to really explore the concepts of 3D geometry, overlap, composite shapes and surface area. Their imaginations can run wild as they create whatever 3D form they want. Some of my students have created robots, dream houses, golf courses, and much more. This project is broken down into different steps so that students can collect all the necessary inf
This simple activity allows students to learn the essentials of bank accounts through group collaboration and with the use of technology. Students are each assigned a bank, then are asked to navigate to the website. Through group and whole-class collaboration, students will draw conclusions about the advantages and disadvantages of checkings and savings accounts, GIC's and TFSA's. Optional: Provide each group with a mini-whiteboard or poster paper to allow them to share information visually wit
This assignment provides students with a real-life example of how integers are used. In this assignment, students record their food/drink intake and their exercise over two days. They then use that data to determine the numbers of calories they've consumed (+ number) and the calories they've burned (- number) and calculate how healthy they are. While the focus of this assignment is on positive and negative numbers, it can also be used to build up to unit price. My students really enjoyed findi
Want to review adding and subtracting large numbers? This activity/assignment is a great way for kids to be creative and practice this skill at the same time. Students will purchase large-ticket items for a celebrity of their choice and then add up the costs. Periodically there are discounts to be applied, so they can practice subtracting large numbers too.
These simple, yet invaluable cards can be printed and distributed on the first day of school to allow students to disclose their pronouns to you in a comfortable, private way. Simply print on cardstock, cut down the middle (2 per page), and hand out. Feedback from students has been positive and appreciative.
This Place Value Game kept my grade 7's entertained for hours! Because it is completely random, all students felt they could participate without judgment of their knowledge. It can be used in a socially-distanced way or in groups.
