This is an AVID activity that teachers can use during the first week of school to set your classroom expectations. You can lead a discussion around what a successful student looks like in your grade level. Students will write around the student outline behaviors, thoughts, and actions that a successful student in that grade level would display. My focus each school year when September 11, comes around is to celebrate our first responders. We honor our first responders with a discussion followed by this activity. During the discussion we talk about who first responders are and why they play an important role in our communities. Students can cut and glue the paper to create a the USA flag. On the other side of the flag they can write who first responders are and why they are important.

These organizers are great tools to help students with their informative writing. This type of organizer is best used for those students who need practice writing a solid paragraph. Step 2 is writing ONE paragraph. If students are ready to write more than one paragraph, I would print them another step 2 & have them add more details to their original main idea organizer in step 1. step #1: brainstorm (page 1)The students would first decide what they are witting about (this is their main idea).

This is my favorite activity to do with my class when introducing the reading comprehension skill: main idea! I print and laminate this document. I start by explaining what the main idea and details are of a story. Then, my students and I try to figure out the main idea by looking at the details (pictures) in slides 2-6. Once they figure out the main idea by analyzing the pictures / details, I will write the main idea in the middle of the organizer. We will then discuss why this is the main idea
