Tis can be used through Zoom or in person. This can be used with families, small groups, or friends. It can also be used for a fun activity in class, although it would probably be best for high schoolers. I uploaded as PowerPoint so that you can make changes if you want.

With the pandemic, many families will not be getting together for the holidays this year. To bring some joy and allow families to still have fun together, I have created games to play through Zoom with your extended family. This can also work with a classroom, but it was created for families. It includes an editable PowerPoint with games such as word scramble, teambuilding challenges, and name that Christmas carol.

This is a scavenger hunt and game to use for virtual groups. It was designed for families, but it makes a great icebreaker for teachers using Zoom through virtual learning. I used it with my eighth graders in May in one of our weekly check-ins, and they really enjoyed it. The scavenger hunt is for all ages, but the Bring Your Own Book activity is for middle school and up.

Only give one per group, and be sure to separate each challenge. Students will come and check with you when they have finished each challenge. When it is correct, you will give them the next challenge. I gave my winning group a prize at the end.

This is the end of the novel exam.

Students choose an idiom. They write a newspaper article as though the idiom was literal. They can make it funny, creative, etc. Then, on the back side of the story, they will write the real meaning of the idiom as well as use it in a sentence. It includes an example and a scoring guide. I have uploaded it in Word so that you can make changes if you wish.

This is an assessment for the figurative language unit. It includes matching term and definition for simile, metaphor, analogy, allegory, allusion, symbol, pun, hyperbole, alliteration, onomatopoeia, idiom, and personification. There is a poem where they must find examples of terms. There are sentences that they must identify as terms.There is a constructed response section that focuses on theme, symbolism, mood, and tone.

This is a worksheet that can be done individually or with a partner to practice with similes, metaphors, and analogies.

This is 16 analogy pairs.I would print these on card stock and laminate to keep them nice for the future.I did this activity by giving each student half an analogy, and then then had to find their partner quietly.You could also do this by giving each group all of the pairs and having them match all of the analogies. (If you do this, I would recommend that you number the backs or print on different colored paper so that the sets do not get mixed up.)

This is a great, fun activity for students after learning about similes and metaphors. Students will fill out the boxes on "stick man." You can take this a step further and have the students either draw what it would look like if everything was literal or write a poem/rap using the information from stick man.
