I use writing portfolios in my classroom to progress monitor my student’s writing abilities and track their growth throughout the year. It is a great formal assessment tool to use at conferences and when grading for report cards. I have found that parents also enjoy writing portfolios as engages them and communicates what we are learning and doing in the classroom. Writing portfolios have sparked interest in writing with my students and allowed growing writers to flourish!

I use this resource as a way to track our stage in the writing process for each unit. I print each stage on cardstock, laminate, cut and assemble it as a clip chart. This allows the students to get a clear objective of what they are working on as writers as we move through each unit. I have also seen teachers use it as a clip chart for students to individually move their clip (i.e. “status of the class”)
