Mythbusters Scientific Method Application Activity

Created by

Students fill out this worksheet as they view an episode of Mythbusters. Students are asked to identify the steps of the scientific method used in the show and explain it in the context of the episode. I use this in my scientific method unit as an application exercise, and I leave copies in my drawer along with a Mythbusters DVD as an emergency substitute lesson plan. Writing a Scientific Argument

In this lesson, students will learn how to use the CER method (claim, evidence, reasoning) to write a scientific argument. In NGSS and STEELS, science and engineering practices are a key part of science instruction. This lesson provides a foundation for middle and high school students to learn how to argue using evidence. The lesson compares CER to the RACES writing strategy to help scaffold the writing process. This 30 minute lesson is perfect for cyber days, 2 hour delays, sub plans, learnin

In this memorable activity, students explore the scientific method by creating, flying, and redesigning paper airplanes. Students practice measurement and estimation, calculating averages, and graphing data. Pre- and Post-lab questions encourage critical thinking about the scientific method. I use this activity with my sophomore Biology students in the first month of school. File includes a student lab handout with procedures and questions, a class data record sheet, and an optional graph la

This lab is designed to be used during an introductory unit in high school chemistry or physical science. It explores the difference between accuracy and precision, and students evaluate the effectiveness of measurement lines on flasks and beakers. During this lab, students will practice taking measurements using graduated cylinders, handling glassware, performing average and percent error calculations, and applying critical thinking to evaluating data. File includes a full lab handout includ

This question bank contains 30 multiple choice questions compatible with ExamView. Topics include a basic introduction to biology (ecosystems, populations, biosphere, biological organization) and the scientific method. Each question is associated with a table, graph, or diagram. (Multiple questions are associated with each diagram.) These questions require application of concepts rather than straight recall.

Project: Using Prezi to Explain the Scientific Method

Created by

This project engages students in a technology-rich project to explain the scientific method to their classmates. Students will use the online presentation tool Prezi to create a presentation on the scientific method. Student handout and grading rubric included in file. Requires access to the internet and student e-mails to create accounts. I recommend you download my free "Prezi primer" to help students with basic commands.

Indirect Observation Lab for Scientific Method

Created by

In this 40-minute lesson, students use indirect observations and deductive reasoning to determine the contents of 10 paper bags. Students use the senses of touch, hearing, and smell to produce 3 high-quality observations and draw a conclusion about the contents. The conclusion can be incorrect, as long as they use deductive reasoning. Try using coffee grounds or a used gym sock to encourage using the sense of smell! The lab emphasizes quality observations while introducing students to the co

Experience

I write science curriculum for a cyber charter school. My early lessons are based on my brick and mortar experience working with urban high school students. I am now building a collection of resources that can be used on your students' devices.

Teaching style

I have found that the most effective teaching strategies put the students to work. Labs, manipulatives, projects, and discovery learning are my focus. Lessons are designed to encourage students to find their own answers. When I use direct instruction, notes are kept short and to the point.
