Objective:
For this project students will present a mathematical concept that we studied this year in Algebra I in the format of a video or skit. The project should be recorded on video/DVD and a written script provided. The content of the project can be presented four different ways (teach a concept, interview a person who uses a concept in real life, present a gimmick to help students remember a concept, or explain why a student needs to learn algebra) A project may have 1 to 4 members with
The purpose of this project is for my ninth grade students to start thinking about what it will cost them to attend college for four years when they graduate from high school. The project will hopefully show them how important their grades are in high school and how good grades can help them to get scholarships to attend the school.
I developed and used this project in a ninth grade Honors Algebra I class, but this can be used in any course at any level. The project itself does not have any
Objective: This is a review game to practice simplifying adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers. It correlates to Prentice Hall Algebra I textbook (2011), Chapter 1, sections 5 and 6. I developed this game for an Honors Algebra I class, but this can be used in a traditional class also. It could also be used in an Pre-Algebra or Algebra II class also. Game can be completed in one 45 minute class period, but can be extended to 1.5 class period. (The students beg me to play whe
Students will create an art design based on a modular number system that only has 5, 6 or 7 numbers using addition, multiplication, subtraction, or division table. Students will create a number table based on the mathematical operation selected, assign each number a pattern, use the table to create an interesting design using reflections in one quadrant and then reflect the design three times. I have used this project off and on in an Honors Geometry class over the past 20 years. Although I te
This is a reinforcement game to practice sum of interior/exterior angles of polygons and finding each interior/exterior angle of regular polygons as well as some basic vocabulary for polygons. This is a game for up to 35 students.
Game Play:
Hand each student one card or multiple cards if you have extra. Pick any student to start the game. The first person will only read the “Who Has” section of their card. All students will work the problem that was read to see if they have the answer to
Objective:
Almost every time students or adults go shopping, they will find items that are on sale. These items have been marked down a certain percent. Almost everyone has to pay sales tax when you purchase items. This project will help students to see some applications of percent's in everyday life.
• To find the original price of an item given sales price and percent discount.
• To find the sales price of an item given original price and percent discount.
• To find the percent discount of
Objective: At some point in everyone’s life, they will probably decide to paint a room in their house or apartment and possibly want to put new flooring down in a room. This project allows students to gain experience in writing a proposal, drawing a floor plan, determining the surface area of the walls in a room that should be painted, determine the area of the floor in a room, and determine the cost to buy the paint and carpet for the room selected. Students will create an art design based on a form of abstract art that uses straight lines or geometric patterns to create a special visual effect that I call Op Art or Optical Art. The contrasting dark and light regions can, at times, appear to be in motion or to represent change in surface, direction, and dimension. I have used this project off and on in an Honors Geometry class over the past 20 years. It is one of my favorite projects because students are allowed to be as creative as th

This is a review game to practice simplifying problems with exponents. It correlates to Prentice Hall Algebra I textbook (2011), Chapter 7, sections 1, 3, 4, and 5. This is a resource for any math classroom from elementary through high school. I teach 9th and 10th graders algebra I and geometry but my daughter in now in 6th grade and as I see her do work, I can see where this would be helpful for her teachers as well. I’m sure this could probably be adapted to other subjects as well.
When exit tickets in math class became more popular, I was having my students just write on a sheet of paper. It was messy and crazy keeping up with a new sheet of paper ea
