Not only is this project a wonderful final project when covering NGSS MS-ESS2-1, it is also the perfect project to integrate science with writing standards as well as visual arts. In this project, students create a pet rock and write a book about the rock's journey through the rock cycle. This is creative project requires students to apply content about the cycling of earth's materials at a higher level. It is engaging, and one of the highlights of the year for students.

This primary source activity engages elementary students in analyzing historical documents in a fun and manageable way. Students analyze "clues" (primary sources) to try and answer an overarching question about Pioneer Life. This student-centered activity has always been a class favorite for my students.

This is an engineering project that I use as a culminating activity to the NGSS standard MS-PS2-2, which states, "Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object."
Students have to design a balloon car, test it, and modify it before a class wide race day. The student report portion has students apply Newton's Laws as well as calculate the speed of their classmates' cars. This activity is al
This is the perfect project to complete a study on the systems of the body. It pairs perfectly with NGSS MS-LS1-3 or NGSS 07-LS1-3 if you are in Kentucky. Assign students to groups and have them create a plan for a theme park based on their body system. This project has students use their knowledge about the organs and function of the body system. The project makes students apply their knowledge in a rigorous way, while keeping students engaged and excited about their final product. For the fina

This is the perfect project to complete a study on the five regions of the United States. Assign students to groups and have them create a plan for a theme park based on their region. This project has students use their knowledge about the economy, history, climate, landforms, and natural resources of the region. The project makes students apply their knowledge in a rigorous way, while keeping students engaged and excited about their final product. For the final product students will create a po

The following is an activity to go along with a study on erosion. It pairs two articles and two maps to have students look for evidence to support the claim "Erosion is having a major impact on Cape Cod." Following the literacy activity, there is an engineering activity that allows students to plan, build, test, and revise a structure to reduce erosion. This purchase also includes a short PowerPoint on ways coastline erosion is reduced to show as a part of the engineering project.

A list of Kentucky Derby Party and Parade ideas that I use in my fourth grade social studies class. This day is one of the highlights of our year. A sample parent letter is included as well as details on each activity.
The following was created to accompany the NGSS standard: MS-ESS2-2. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales.
It takes real data from earthquakes and has students use their understanding of the earth to apply reasoning behind it. This is a short supplementary activity that would be a great accompaniment to a unit on Plate Tectonics or Earthquakes. Could easily be used for assessment of student unders
This project is a fun way to cover famous Kentuckians in your Kentucky Studies class. Students choose a famous Kentuckian, research that person, write a speech on that person, and create a visual representation of that person to present to the class. It is a great way to cover this content in a student centered way, as well as teach students some research and speech giving skills.
Included in download: instructions, list of Kentucky Heroes, parent letter, examples of visuals, and scoring guide
This is a simple Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning activity that requires students to think about the time it takes each planet to rotate the sun. It is a great addition to the NGSS Standard: MS-ESS1-3. Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system.
I love teaching about the Civil War from the perspective of Kentucky! This simple open response uses a quote by Abraham Lincoln and has students get to the root of Kentucky's role in the Civil War.
