Tectonic Tessellation Playground

In this NGSS-aligned investigation, students will analyze seafloor age data in the classroom, look for patterns and structure in the Earth’s crust, and create a digital model of Pangea or their own reconstruction of a paleo-Earth. They will explore plate tectonics and plate boundaries using Google Earth.

DiscoMath's 25 Favorite Math Investigations

Our math investigations are designed on the project-based learning model (PBL). PBL is a student-centered pedagogy that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which students gain knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges. Students team up and learn about applied math topics by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question or set of related problem. The math investigations listed are intended to be student-facing PBL instructional p

Let's Look Inside the Earth - Earthquake Investigation

In this NGSS-aligned investigation students will analyze USGS seismology data in the classroom using spreadsheets and scatter plots to look for patterns and structure in the Earth’s crust. Before analyzing data, students will learn about the methods scientists use to gather seismic data. They will explore plate tectonics, plate boundaries, and volcanoes using Google Earth. The teacher will provide demonstrations on the types of faults and how earthquakes propagate and travel through the earth.

Don't Jump to Conclusions (CER Framework)

The CER Framework (Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning) was developed by Katherine McNeill and Joseph Krajcik to help students make sense out of observational evidence when making explanations for questions they ask about the natural world. Use this lesson series to introduce CER to your students. They will make observations of a mystery object, make a claim about it, and write a reasoning statement that makes sense. Aligned to NGSS Science and Engineering Practices.

Teaching style

Preparing students to face the challenges of our world with an upbeat attitude is my purpose as a teacher. In class, students are outfitted with the knowledge, tools, skills, and habits to support ongoing learning and growth of character. I emphasize an engagement focused classroom. The teacher and students alike help each other to foster a keen sense of enthusiasm, creative curiosity, and optimism. They engage together, meeting challenges individually and collectively. Students develop a character platform upon which is built success and happiness that reaches well beyond the classroom. The classroom acts as a well-oiled company of learners trooping through the landscape.
