This is an adaptation of the CAFE menu for reading strategies. Each student would have their own copy of this menu to set and track their individual reading goals. During reading conferences, simply insert a date in the box next to the strategy the student is working on if they demonstrate that it successfully. Once the student successfully demonstrates a strategy three times, and three dates are recorded, they move on to a new strategy to practice as their goal.

This activity consists of 10 self checking, student task cards. Each card contains a multi-step word problem and a QR code for students to scan and check their answer. This set can be used as an independent or station activity. Just print, cut and laminate to enjoy multiple uses.
Directions:
Students (or partners) solve each word problem. When they find a solution to a problem, they search for the plastic egg with that number on it. They open the egg to check their answer. They should either mark it correct, or fix their work. They then put the answer card back in the egg and re-hide it in the same spot. Students continue this until they have either solved all of the problems, or have run out of time.
This could also be used as a math center!

How about using Smarties to teach fractions and probability? Give each student their own pack of Smarties. Begin by having them sort the colors and determine the fraction of each color in their package. Using their sorted piles, and fractions, have them determine the probability of getting each color in their package. You could extend by having partners compare their results. If you have a SmartBoard, Display the chart and collect data/fractions/probability for the whole class.
What better way to interest your students in fractions than using candy manipulatives? With this review activity, students will identify, compare and add fractions with like denominators.
This is a fun way to culminate your non-fiction reading unit! For this project, students are required to read multiple sources (books, articles, e-books etc) on the same topic. They then create an interactive fact or fiction board about their topic. Half of their notes are facts and half are fiction (but seem like facts to trick the reader). The students write the actual fact beneath each fiction statement. Not only did students enjoy the project, and the gallery walk where they learned about ea
Use this chart for an individual student. Each line provides a space for a personal goal to be entered (whether individual goals, or tracking the day by subject/period). The student becomes responsible for self monitoring.
