STRATEGY :
There are two bonding race car worksheets to help students become fluent with their bonds to 100. The first race track is bonds to 100 using friendly numbers. Example: 30 + 70. The second worksheet is bond to 10 and add the rest. Example: 48 + 52. I have also shared a very good free site (Greg Tang's) that has many other practice bonding practice sheets.
Students use mental math strategies to quickly bond to 100.

Subitizing is the instant ability to recognize objects without counting them. Subitizing is something that is done everyday in each of our lives. One example of subitizing is when you roll a dice. If you roll a six, do you count every dot or do you identify two rows of three?
At the beginning of the year we give our students a quick subitizing quiz to assess their ability to "see" numbers at a glance, without one-to-one counting. We use several different subitizing activities to help them with
NEW!!! We have added a new calendar!! Now there are two to choose from!
THIS IS THE BEST CALENDAR I HAVE EVER USED!!!
The use of daily calendars helps review important math concepts and reinforces concepts being taught in class. Many students need a CONTINUOUS review to reinforce and retain many critical math concepts. This calendar reviews knowledge of place value, fractions, decimals, rounding, part-part whole, and percents.
Each student should have a copy of the math calendar to put i

Suggestions for using Activities:
• Use an Al Abacus to help students show concrete bonds. We have found that the Al Abacus is a great way to use manipulatives without having to worry about them getting scattered all over desks and floors. Use the template to have students record the bonds

These 8 1/2 x 11 place value mats are VERY useful to teach place value, addition, subtraction, or multiplication concretely. We use them with base 10 blocks or discs. We also use them with fraction strips. They are MUST in our classrooms!!
They are easy to use because the periods are on separate pages. If you

Example of students playing first to 100
We played "First to 100" to practice subitizing skills, counting, and working in teams the first week-month of school.
We also played "First to 0" starting at 100 and writing backwards.
Throughout the year there are many other ways we play this game.
The bonding sheet helps the students avoid errors. When they get to the tenth square, there will always be a friendly number of ten.
When we play first to 1 whole the students are writing decimals.

Experience
We (Jan and Nancy) have been teaching 5th grade for 17 years. We teach at a title one school and have students with many challenges. We collaborate and we never stop learning. We just received our math endorsement. We are Singapore Math Presenters and have been using Singapore Math in our classroom for the past 8 years.
Teaching style
When we teach a new math strategy we always start with the concrete, move to the pictorial, and then to the abstract. Our goal is for our students to understand math instead of memorizing a rule.
Awards & shining teacher moments
National Presenters for two years at The Singapore Math Conferece (SDE). Presenters at NCTM UT.
My own education history
We have both received our Math Endorsements. We have been to SDE's Train the Trainers and attended their Singapore Math Conventions for the past 8 years. We have been presenters for SDE the last two years. We are also district trainers and present within our state.
