This study guide explains how to find the surface area for cylinders, triangular prisms and other polygonal prisms. Included are links to websites for surface area formulas, a surface area calculator (cylinders), a surface area calculator (rectangular prisms), triangular prisms, and an online interactive problem site. This guide gives two examples as well as some real world application information and the distinction of right prisms. Finally, there are 11 problems with detailed solutions for
This is a class activity that utilizes discussion boards but can easily be adapted to in-class use. Students use measurements and surface area to calculate the amount of paint needed to paint a room. They must take into account windows, doors, etc. They must explain how they do their calculations and discuss their methodology. They post their solutions and then respond to at least 2 of their classmates. This helps students develop writing and communication skills that they will need in a jo
Irregular polygons are those that need to be taken apart with the area of each piece calculated. This study guide shows several examples that are worked out. Also included are one compound problem (finding the amount of carpet needed and the cost) and one trapezoid problem. Included is a link to a website that helps demonstrate/explain the process.
This study guide talks about the measures used for area and perimeter for circles, triangles and quadilateralsand provides links to sites that explain how to use the formula and the derivation of the formula. There is also a diagram showing the relationship between the areas of the quadrilaterals. Authored by Julane Crabtree
This is a short outline of the objectives and keywords (or vocabulary) for a unit on basic Geometry. Included is recognizing figures and the study of area, perimeter, volume, surface area, similar triangles & the Pythagorean Theorem. Good for a teacher at any level to use when planning lessons. I have used these for students in grade school as well as those who are in remedial math at the community college level.
This assignment involves using the web to check out prices and layouts for tiles and for big screen TV's as part of a home improvement project. It is set up for a group of 2 but can be assigned to individuals. The answers provided may need updated as they are a few years old. Students find pricing for tiles and backing boards as well as investigate tiling with tessellations. They also investigate the best size TV for a specific space.
