Here are 50 questions regarding the History of Math. Sample answers are included. This is a great project for both groups and individuals. You can also give out the questions a few at a time during the semester for extra credit or for projects. I used this with all levels of high school math but it is also appropriate for middle school. I hope that all the websites shown on the answers are correct as I haven't checked them lately. Many of the questions have multiple answers and you can accep

This is one in my series of lessons using the graphing calculator for Algebra Classes. This one is for any Algebra level. Students use the graphing calculator to graph and explore direct and inverse variations and their relationship to each other. Joint variation is included. This is a great way to show the students a visual representation of these concepts and to get them ready for inverse functions. Students can do the work in groups or individually. It can be used as a discovery lesson or a

Here is a worksheet that lists the 8 steps needed to complete and optimization problem: constraints, domain, objective function, solving/substituting, taking the derivative, doing the test for max/min, and finally writing an answer statement for the problem. Included is a step-by-step problem that utilizes the 8 steps. I encouraged my students to do every one of their problems on this worksheet so that they would have the steps clearly in their mind. When giving an exam, I did not provide th

This lab activity (done in groups of 3-4) develops Pascal's triangle using two different color chips. I usually use checkers but any sort of chips (even poker chips) will do. Students determine color arrangements with 1, 2, 3, etc disks. These pages are set up for "red" and "not red" but can easily be adapted to the chips you have. Students will determine the pattern and then complete Pascal's triangle. This is a good discovery lesson, especially for the end of the semester if teaching this

This is one in my series of using the graphing calculator for Algebra Classes. This one is for Algebra II or Intermediate Algebra. Students use the graphing calculator to graph functions, copy the graphs, and use the trace tool to help them find the roots of the equation. They then write the factors for the function. This is a great alternative to factoring and shows students the relationships they need when them move on to calculus. Students can do the work in groups or individually. It c

This webquest is a search for the "Father of Calculus." Students will explore the contributions of Liebniz and Newton and write an editorial supporting their decision as to who is the true father of calculus. Students can work in groups but all submit their own editorial and supporting documentation.

This assignment is an example of writing in calculus. Students work in groups to solve the problem presented by the client and then write a collaborative report explaining the solution. This assignment can be done individually but, when used in a group setting, students learn not only how to express their ideas but the concept of working in a team. I generally allow the students to divide the work among themselves without input. General time-frame is two weeks for completion of the assignme

It is divided into two sections so that it can be done during two class periods. The last page asks the student to make comparisons between the graphs and the properties of the two functions, leading to the inverse property between the two. This activity lends itself easily to collaborative learning and that is encouraged. Students are also enc

I use this worksheet as an introduction to the first derivative test. Students use the graphing calculator to generate the graphs of both a function and it's first derivative. They do not need to calculate the derivative at this point so the calculator comes in handy for the graphing. Students observe and record the behavior of the graph of the derivative, thus discovering for themselves how the behavior relates to the original function. They can work alone or in pairs - my preference is f

A total of 10 problems includes finding the general form of the limit of the difference quotient, the slope of the tangent line, and the instantaneous rate of change. A good final study and problem practice or assessment for the limit definition of the derivative. I use this prior to going to the derivative rules (or shortcuts).

This is a review worksheet. Students work in groups using their graphing calculator to find equations for applications using parabolas, logs & exponential functions. They will also find correlation coefficients using the graphing calculator. Students are instructed to go to a website to print out the graphs but this can be modified based on the tech equipment available in the classroom. This can be used at the College Algebra, Pre-Calc or Calculus level.
