This activity is a fun way for students to practice their skills at solving literal equations. Students can work individually, in pairs or in groups (your choice). I recommend printing/copying the activity onto colored paper. Students will cut out all of the squares and solve each problem located in the top of each box. They then find the solution in the bottom of one of the other boxes. After finding the solution, they solve the new equation in the top of that box. They can glue or tape e

This PowerPoint can be used with or without manipulatives. If you would like to use manipulatives, create and laminate cards for each student or group of students with the letters a, b, c, d and e. You need both positive and negatives along with symbols for adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and equals. There are 6 examples of solving literal equations which you can cover using the PowerPoint alone or by having students create the equations with their laminated cards. After practicin

This PowerPoint guides students through learning how to add polynomials using Algebra Tiles. This worked great in my classroom! I gave a set of Algebra Tiles to each student. I had the students model the problem along with me through the power point. Then I asked students to illustrate the model on their own paper. We then worked through solving the problem using the tiles and again algebraically recognizing and combining like terms. The PowerPoint includes 4 examples, a word problem and m

In this activity students will use function notation to create a 4 x 4 puzzle. I recommend letting students do this in groups or with a partner. I have used this in my classroom and it is great with high level learners! It is a great enrichment activity and it really gives them great insight and practice into the "what" that is actually happening with function notation! I teach on a block schedule and it takes my students about 60 - 70 minutes to finish the puzzle.

Additional biographical information

My family and I live in North Carolina. I have experience teaching mathematics grades 6 - 12 at the secondary level as well as at the community college level. After graduation from high school, instead of going straight to college, I began working. Throughout my twenties I worked as a waitress, a clerk in a county tax office, on an assembly line, as an Office Manager, and as Human Resources Assistant at a major distribution warehouse. I took night classes and earned an Associates Degree while working full time. I went back to college after completing my Associate's to pursue my dream of teaching. I went on to finish my Bachelor's and then my Master's. I am a Christian, I love coffee and crocheting. I believe in honesty, gratitude, and kindness. I believe that my life experiences give me a true advantage in my classroom and they help me provide my students with relevance, accountability and the value of hard work.
