Literal Equations Scavenger Hunt

This activity is a fun way for students to practice their skills at solving literal equations. Students can work individually, in pairs or in groups (your choice). I recommend printing/copying the activity onto colored paper. Students will cut out all of the squares and solve each problem located in the top of each box. They then find the solution in the bottom of one of the other boxes. After finding the solution, they solve the new equation in the top of that box. They can glue or tape e

This activity goes hand in hand with the Multiplying Polynomials PowerPoint that guides students through 4 examples of multiplying polynomials using the box method. The lesson begins by reviewing vocabulary and then goes into an example of a monomial by a binomial. There are two examples of binomials times binomials and the final example is multiplying two trinomials. I followed this presentation by giving students the Multiplying Polynomials Notecard Activity and then having them complete th

In this activity students will use function notation to create a 4 x 4 puzzle. I recommend letting students do this in groups or with a partner. I have used this in my classroom and it is great with high level learners! It is a great enrichment activity and it really gives them great insight and practice into the "what" that is actually happening with function notation! I teach on a block schedule and it takes my students about 60 - 70 minutes to finish the puzzle.

These 36 task cards are a great resource for students to practice their understanding of The Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. These task cards can be used as a triples activity where students can match the equation to the number of solutions along with the actual solutions, or these cards can be used as a matching activity where they only match the equation to the number of solutions or the equation to the solutions. Print, cut, laminate (store the laminated cards in a ziploc bag for reuse), shuf

Verizon, AT&T, U.S. Cellular and Cricket are all mobile phone companies that offer plans that can be written as linear equations. In this activity, students will use the internet to create their own linear equations for each cell phone company. After writing their equation, they will graph their lines, compare the functions, make a hypothesis and test their hypothesis. Then they can use their findings to discuss the cell phone company that they think is the best. This activity is great for s

This PDF is meant to be used as a tool for guiding students through a lesson in writing linear equations in point-slope form, standard form and slope intercept form. See the PowerPoint presentation that goes with these guided notes that includes steps for students to learn and there are two examples - one example is given the slope and a point and one example is given two points. Through each example students are asked to write each equation in all three forms.

This worksheet can be given as classwork, homework or group work. Students are asked to plot 4 points on a given graph. They must connect the points by drawing specific line segments and find the slope of each segment. Students must identify and describe parallel lines, write an equation of one line in slope intercept form and in standard form. Then students are asked to determine what the slope intercept form of the segment would be if the segment was shifted up three units.

This method is a way for students to relate ideas to each other, learn to create their own word problems and prepare for standardized testing. Included in this free document is an outline, a linear function, a quadratic function, a linear inequality and a piecewise function.

Additional biographical information

My family and I live in North Carolina. I have experience teaching mathematics grades 6 - 12 at the secondary level as well as at the community college level. After graduation from high school, instead of going straight to college, I began working. Throughout my twenties I worked as a waitress, a clerk in a county tax office, on an assembly line, as an Office Manager, and as Human Resources Assistant at a major distribution warehouse. I took night classes and earned an Associates Degree while working full time. I went back to college after completing my Associate's to pursue my dream of teaching. I went on to finish my Bachelor's and then my Master's. I am a Christian, I love coffee and crocheting. I believe in honesty, gratitude, and kindness. I believe that my life experiences give me a true advantage in my classroom and they help me provide my students with relevance, accountability and the value of hard work.
