About the store
I have 31 years of teaching experience, 14 years in elementary 17 in middle school. After 6 years of teaching Algebra 1 GATE and pre-algebra, I took on a new position as a math intervention specialist helping struggling math students, preparing lessons for teachers, and team-teaching with classroom math teachers. 17 years later I returned to elementary school where I am currently a math professional development coach in grades K-5. I truly believe in the necessity of teaching the "why" of mathematics. My favorite moments are the "Oh, now I get it!" ones.

Estimating Products ~ Multiplying Decimals ~ Real World
This 5 page document which includes an answer key contains lesson ideas on how to use the 2 pages of shopping items with prices listed. There are several ways to use the cards/items listed in the document (pairs check, independent practice, game, etc). Students use estimation to figure out the prices of purchasing a number of items as well as figuring out the exact cost of the items. Order of Operations Notes + Guided Practice Worksheet
This download includes two pages of notes introducing order of operations using G.E.M.S. and Mr. Multiplication/Division & Ms. Addition/Subtraction and one page of guided practice problems that include decimals. I've found this strategy to be really helpful when reinforcing that those operations are to be completed left to right. Two of the problems contain decimals which makes it more challenging for upper level 5th graders.

Adding & Subtracting Integers Puzzle
This is a 16 problem activity where students answer addition and subtraction of integers problems. I used this fun puzzle activity right after I taught the concept, so the problems are relatively easy so that the students can experience success with the concept. Students must cut out the numbered puzzle pieces and glue them in the correct lettered squares according the answer table. Answer key/finished product is included.

In this 1 page, 6 question worksheet, students must read each word problem and circle any words that may be present that signal an operation (add, subtract, multiply, or divide), and then write that operation on the line. Students are not asked to solve the problem. Of course, you can still have them do that. The point is just to get them to identify what operation is needed. Teaching style
Hands on, self-discovery, inquiry-based, real life applications, making sure students understand the "Why" of mathematics. Without a conceptual understanding, is there really understanding? I want to build thinkers vs mimickers.
