I have over 13 years experience teaching high school math. I started my career teaching in Quincy, Florida for 2 years. After that I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina for 3 years. I tried it back home where I grew up in Juneau, Alaska for 2 years. After leaving Alaska, I moved back to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where I taught for 4 years and I was the department chair for the last 3 years. Basic Graphing Coordinates Pop Quiz

This is a quick quiz that would be great to give as a warm-up or pop quiz. It will allow you to assess the students quickly on their understanding of coordinate points and ordered pairs. There are 6 points to graph and 6 points that they have to determine the ordered pair and quadrant (or axis). There are 2 different versions of this quiz that way students have to do their own work and you will easily be able to determine if they cheated. (They usually do not even see if they are copying fro

This is a 20 question quiz that covers the basics of graphing. There is a key along with the quiz. The breakdown of the types of questions is below. • Graphing points (1 problem - 5 points to graph on coordinate plane) • Writing Coordinates & quadrants (1 problem - 5 points that need the coordinates written) • Given a relation, find the domain, range, and inverse (4 problems) • Create a mapping given a relation (1 problem) • Given replacement set of 4 points, find the solution set (2

This worksheet that has 10 problems that deal with parallel and perpendicular slopes. The first four problems given have 2 lines, and the students have to determine if the lines have parallel, perpendicular, or not related slopes. Two of these problems need the slope formula and the other two the student are required to get linear equations in slope-intercept form. The next four problems require the students to write linear equations, given a point, and a slope relationship. The last two p

This worksheet has 8 linear application problems that are broken down into 2 steps. The first step is to write the linear equation. The second part of the problem is when a number is given and the students have to decide where to plug it in, and how to solve the equation. It is a great practice worksheet and it will help them take things step by step.

This is a quiz that will assess your student's understanding of how to: determine the domain, range, inverse of a relation, and determining if a relation is a function; finding the midpoint or endpoint of a line given two points; and determine the value of a function. There are 2 different versions with the same difficulty of problems. The midpoint point problems are great because they are application problems. This quiz only has 10 questions, so it could be completed in 15 minutes or less,

This worksheet is great to use if you have introduced Midpoint problems through pictures. I used this worksheet after I did a class investigation on how to find the middle of students standing on a coordinate plane. Once they learned how to find the point between them (the endpoints), I had them model and find the endpoint when given an endpoint and midpoint. After practicing the different types of midpoint problems, I use this worksheet for the students to practice it on their own. I also t

This worksheet is great to use if you have introduced the Midpoint Formula. Usually textbooks do not give a lot of problems dealing with midpoint formula, so this worksheet would be a great homework or class work assignment for students to practice this formula. There are 7 basic midpoint problems when given the endpoints. There are 5 problems that are given the endpoint and the midpoint, and the other endpoint needs to be found. There are 4 application problems, 1 is a find the other endpoi

This is a brief quiz that can be given to the students after they have started to learn how to graph. It does not follow the order of the book, but I usually use it after I have taught graphing lines (and inequalities) by table and intercepts. I also threw in some verbal function problems because I always start the graphing unit with them. I don't have the students graph the functions, but I have them create the equations, plug in the values, and solve them. This is very similar to what they

This is a great way to review how to graph lines using tables, intercepts, and slope-intercept form. You can use it as a summary tool or review before a quiz or test, or as a brief review for an Algebra 2 class. You can also have the students break up into groups and have each group do a different method then share with the class, or you can guide them and tell them to do one at a time and go over it on the board. There are a lot of different ways to incorporate such a good graphic organizer

Teaching style

Each school that I have taught in has been considered a "low performing" school and I have always worked with students that come in lacking prior knowledge and the motivation to be successful. I create and use a lot of activities and games that help keep my students engaged. A co-worker of mine calls me, "The Game Queen."

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was a Level 5 teacher for the 2011-2012 in Tennessee, with some of the highest scores in Algebra 2 for the school district (which included my inclusion class)

My own education history

I graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1994. I attended Florida State University and earned my Bachelors degree in December 1998 for Curriculum and Instruction: Mathematics Education (6-12). Masters, Mathematics Education K-8, University of Alaska Southeast.

Additional biographical information

I love teaching and I have always been able to make connections with my students and peer teachers. I hope that you enjoy my activities, worksheets, tests, and anything else.
