Integrating art with social studies is the objective of this project. Students will be using the material presented in social studies books about The Trail of Tears, illustrations of what the journey might have looked like, and maps to create a "triptych", or a three-paneled illustration of one concept. The middle panel is usually the largest and is surrounded by two smaller related illustrations, one on each side of the middle panel, although there are triptychs of equal-sized panels. The eq

Are you looking for a fun, creative, and informative way to assess your students at the end of an ecosystems unit? This is a great authentic assessment project to do just that. Students will be able to select an ecosystem and plants/animals about which they are interested in learning more, and they can also use their creative skills to draw the ecosystems, plants, and animals as well as abiotic factors of their chosen ecosystem.
Materials - the teacher will need at least six 4" x 6" index c
Are you looking for a fun way to review weather concepts? Weather Jeopardy! is a PowerPoint created in the traditional Jeopardy! style. The material aligns with North Carolina Essential Standards but would certainly be useful for any science teacher in any state. I have used this product with my own 5th grade students in the past, and they love playing the game!
This project is designed for students to select a country of South America of their choosing and research various aspects of that country, such as the government, the people, the culture, etc. A page explaining basic references is also included along with a rubric for the project. This is a project about South America but could easily be modified to be about any country, any continent, or any state. It could also be adapted to be used for a science concept or a piece of literature.
This is a great activity to use when teaching about biomes, ecosystems, food chains/food webs, etc. It sounds difficult but isn't, and my 5th grade students enjoy doing this activity every year. This would be appropriate for students up to 7th or 8th grade, and it would also be a good activity for an older special needs student, depending upon his/her abilities. The activity includes directions, a sheet to print out for the students to draw their biotic and abiotic factors, sample illustration
This is a PowerPoint showing various animals utilizing their camouflage capabilities. There are two slides for each animal. The first slide asks the viewer to find the animal, and the second slide shows the animal as circled with its name.
The US Postal Service commemorates many famous people and events through postage stamps. This is a project commemorating famous people or places/events in Ancient Greece or Rome. Students will be creating a postage stamp and writing at least a half-page report about the subject of the stamp. A rubric is included.
This is an activity labsheet to use when teaching about the rock cycle. It uses crayons to model the three kinds of rocks along with the processes that create each kind of rock. The labsheet begins by describing weathering and erosion using the crayons. Next, it describes sediments layering on top of each other and being pressed together to form sedimentary rock, more pressure (creating heat) to form metamorphic rock, and finally melting the rock in an aluminum pie pan over a hot plate to form
This is an activity worksheet/labsheet to use when teaching science process skills. It is for use when teaching about "predicting". The teacher passes out a small cup of M & Ms. The instructions are on the labsheet. The student may eat the M & Ms after completing the activity worksheet/labsheet. Of course, it is important that the teacher checks to determine if anyone in the class has a food allergy to chocolate or other ingredients in the candy. This activity could also be modified to use
If you've ever had to remind your students over and over again what the routines or procedures are for the morning, here's the answer! The Morning Routine Flow Map instructs students with words and pictures as to what to do in the morning before school begins. The Flow Map includes arrows for the flow map component and is a Word document so that adjusting it to suit your students' age/developmental levels and your procedures can be easily done. I print out the sheets, glue them to sheets of
If you're looking for a way to celebrate the 100th day of school and you teach older children, here is a math Tic Tac Toe project that is customizable and geared toward 4th-7th graders. Just about all components are included in the project, from measurement to numbers and operations to probability to time. A grading sheet is included.
One note - there is an activity in the Tic Tac Toe that mentions for the student to measure his/her own steps and determine how many steps it is to places of in
Math teachers in North Carolina of grades 5-8 are required to teach their students how to express their answers in open- or gridded responses boxes for their End-of-Grade tests. This activity helps students to not only practice their skills at dividing by one-digit numbers but to also practice how to enter answers in the gridded-response boxes.
Can be used for any other state, too, but is geared toward North Carolina. Enjoy!
This is a short biography and crossword puzzle on the life of Sacajawea. The reading level is about 6.1. Could be used as part of differentiated instruction or a project.
Is mostly aimed at 5th-8th graders but could also be used with an upper level 4th grade class.
To evaluate if your students understand the theme of "Movement" from the Five Themes of Geography, this task taps into your students' creative side. A product is created, and the students draw illustrations of either transportation or communication in the US from before 1800 to today and the future. The future, of course, is speculative, but again taps into students' creativity. A rubric is included as well. This file is in Microsoft Word 2010 so that teachers can modify it in any way they wish
Are your students having difficulties with remembering what a "perpendicular line" is or what "regular" means as it applies to a geometric figure? This picture book project asks students to find examples of geometry in everyday life, thus helping them to make the connection between geometric concepts in the classroom and geometric concepts in the real world. Students may use the Internet, magazines, books, or their own drawings to create the book. Books can be printed out with clip art picture
If you're tired of using the same old project ideas year after year, this project uses materials that most students have around the house and is colorful and different. This project also allows students to choose a state in the United States to delve more deeply into through research. Students will be creating a cube (a box) of a state of their choice, or the teacher might assign the states to the students to prevent students from doing the same states. The teacher can decide to allow students t
Kids enjoy learning about stars and constellations; who doesn't like looking up into the night sky and gazing at the wonders of the heavens?
This task allows students to choose a constellation and learn more about it. There are over 70 constellations from which to choose, so there shouldn't be too many tasks that are similar.
The task includes an explanation sheet and a rubric with which to grade the task. I am posting it as a Word document so it can be modified to suit your own classroom's ne
This bookmark can be used to help students remember certain strategies become more successful in math. For those of you who utilize the Response to Intervention program, this bookmark can be used for the "math reasoning" intervention as a learning strategy. I have printed out a bookmark for every one of my students so they can refer to it in class or at home. It can be printed out on white cardstock and cut apart for student use. Only one side of the card prints at a time, but the card can be
You're getting ready for the 5th Grade Science EOG and you know you need to review for it, but the students are just so burned out. (And to tell the truth, you're a little burned out as well) Instead of more drill and kill worksheets, try a fun review that takes place outside and also reviews the students on forces and motion concepts using common objects. This is a two-part review. The first part involves students running around a track of a pre-determined distance. They are able to calculate t
Kids love to learn about animals, and this project allows them to select an animal about which they've always wanted to learn. Children will be creating their own book about an animal of their choice. Instructions are provided for creating the book along with a research sheet children can use to write down their notes and references. Teachers can choose to have their students create the book entirely at school or allow them to make it at home, so the time required to create the project can v
