I give the student 2 minutes to “read” the first slide out loud or alternatively I ask them to time themselves reading the colours in out loud as quickly as possible. I then show them the second slide, where they have to say the colour each word is written in in and challenge them to complete this in 2 minutes of beat their first time – they never do! Then I

I designed these activities to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. These resources could also be used each year to commemorate the Armistice. I really wanted the students to experience and express an emotional connection with the topic and can honestly say that they produced some extremely moving written work in response to the material. They were also studying themed lessons in History, English and Drama lessons on the topic of World War 1. I spent 2 lessons on

What other factors could affect it? What do you think the “happiness advantage” is? When you feel positive, how much more productive is your brain than when you feel negative, neutral or stressed? I worked in an international school in sunny Dubai for 9 years and relished the challenge of leading the MFL faculty. I have now relocated to the UK and have a gorgeous new baby daughter - exciting times!

Teaching style

I created a colourful and stimulating classroom, where I taught with energy and enthusiasm! I have a learning-centred approach and encouraged my students to be active learners. Differentiation is key in an international context and I worked hard to personalise the learning. I coupled games, songs and lively activities with assessment for learning strategies such as peer and self-assessment to encourage my students to be reflective learners.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I organised a yearly International Week, celebrating the languages, foods, costumes and traditions of the students and staff. A hi-light of this was the International Food Court and I loved seeing all the students in their national costumes experiencing new cuisine from around the world!

My own education history

I studied GCSE and A Levels at a school in Devon in the Southwest of England before going to university in Wales to study French and geography. Following three years in TEFL I returned the the UK to complete my PGCE.

Additional biographical information

My husband and I are keen foodies and I also enjoy yoga, pilates, aerobics, walking, international cinema, reading and traveling.
