Problem solving needs to begin with concrete manipulatives. Students need to kinesthetically “put together” and “take apart” concrete manipulatives to conceptually understand addition and subtraction. Students need concrete objects to use while solving these problems. I suggest using unifix or snap cubes before drawing a picture. (Concrete always before pictorial)
